hi hello hey, the title says it all: Cassandra’s guide dog, Romana, is retiring

Like humans, guide dogs also get to retire from their years of hard work! Romana has worked for nearly 8 wonderful years and has earned a well deserved rest. In this episode, Cass explains what the retirement process entails. She and Case share memories and laughs from Romana’s career and celebrate her. This episode isn’t entirely Romana-centric though, because we even get a little update on how Rupert is doing!

It’s been a minute since we’ve talked about chronic illness, since one of the most recent episodes we did on it was nearly two years ago where we shared funny moments of being sick (check ep 40 out!). We really wanted to talk about our changing health since it’s been something we’ve been dealing with lately.

This episode is like a part two to one of our all-time favorites, too blind to be sighted, too sighted to be blind. This time, we focus on the pains of explaining our changing stamina, navigating doctors, and celebrating small wins .

Since meeting at our very first Hermansky-Pudlak Syndrome Conference in 2014, we’ve always been friends, but our relationship has grown and changed over time. What started as periodic FaceTime calls became talking daily and maintaining a nearly four-year-old podcast! If you’ve ever wondered how we got so close as long-distance friends, this episode lays out how we started and the events that brought us close and into “bestie territory.”

Early on, we recorded an episode called, “dear sighted people,” where we talked about the things sighted people do that make us feel valued. Sometimes, though, sighted people do or say things to us that make us laugh, either because they’re tone-deaf or bordering on micro-aggressions. Of course, the last thing we want to do is make others feel like everything they do is wrong or hurtful.
