✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
Learn from 8-year-old Susie, who shares vital lessons on building character, being honest and compassionate starts at an early age. This is the debut book in the series, The Adventures of Susie Spinach and the Little Gees: What is Good Character? that demonstrates that it is important to do the right thing even when it's tempting not to.
Author Anna Marie Giuffre shares that the star of the story has been near and dear to her heart for the past ten years. "As kids, there are times when we don't want to listen, when things go wrong, and when we just need to learn a really good life lesson. Susie Spinach is a character that my nana Gloria always taught me about, and I thought the world should know Susie and the values she represents. As we travelled to schools and we've been to so many places around the United States and a few countries, we found them loving not just Susie but also Samantha, Johnny, and Frankie. Having good character means always trying to do the right thing when it can be hard. Children need to learn this now more than ever."
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Anna Marie Giuffre is the author and Creator of The Adventures of Susie Spinach and the Little Gees. Good Character is the first book in the series. As the Owner of Seedling Publishing and Founder of nonprofit Purposeful Adventures, Anna aims to grow a meaningful brand that teaches little ones how to dream big, live with purpose, and much more. It is all about sowing the seeds of righteousness and growing our children's goodness because they are the future.

This episode will read Afro Unicorn & Cassidy Brianna presents: Thank You, It's An Afro by Cassidy Bridges & Gabrielle Whetstone Bridges.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
On a warm winter day in New York City, Cassidy wanted to have a photoshoot. She picked out her Afro Unicorn shirt and African print skirt because they made her feel unique, magical, and divine. What happened next became a viral video that let the world know how beautiful afro hair was and how important it is to love yourself and acknowledge beauty not just in yourself but others. Thank You, It's An Afro is a story of self-love and afro appreciation and a great book to celebrate being yourself and your God-given beauty. It is also a great introduction to afro hair for those that are unfamiliar with it.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHORS:
Meet Cassidy Brianna Bridges, an actor, author, influencer and kid entrepreneur. She was four years old when her short video made rounds on the internet in 2021 and went viral. A woman complimented Cassidy's hair when she replied, "Thank you, it's an afro!" Her adorable video reminds us how girls and adults should take pride in our color and beauty and always wear their natural crowns with confidence daily!
Cassidy has sparked a movement across the world! Her mom, Gabrielle Whetstone Bridges, shares that they've been getting messages from every continent since then. "Viola Davis shared it, and then Tina Knowles, and it kept going and kept going. So I knew that we were given a platform to share the message; we definitely made sure that we encouraged people to love the skin that we're in, and it's important to me as a parent to make sure that I'm instilling that message into Cassidy."
They developed the campaign to let children see themselves in clothing, home items, and a book inspired by people who reached out and were inspired by Cassidy. "People send messages saying, I'm encouraged to wear my natural hair. I'm inspired to wear my afro and know that it's beautiful to know that as professionals, I can still feel powerful and gorgeous with my natural curls, kinks and all. I wish that those things were instilled in me when I was that age."
The mother and daughter wrote their book entitled Thank You, It's An Afro which absolutely became life-changing for many people.

This episode will read Tangled Up by Jamie Edelbrock.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
Studies show one in six kids between the ages of two-and eight-years-old have a mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. Navigating this world as a parent can be scary, but experiencing this as a young child can be even scarier.
Author Jamie Edelbrock tackles this difficult topic in heartfelt words and pictures that unpack how it's like to be "tangled up" as complicated thoughts and emotions happen.
The book shares how you must be brave and seek help from special people called therapists and counselors who help people when they are tangled up. They are professional detanglers who are willing to help and understand how important and unique you are.
Tangled Up is intended to lessen the fear of the unknown and shines a positive, peaceful light on mental health and therapy.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Jamie Edelbrock is a homeschool mom, preschool director, family ministry director, author, and advocate for children's mental health. Her award-winning children's book Tangled Up shares with kids and adults alike that it's okay not to be okay. The book started as Jamie's love letter to her daughter, telling her that she isn't alone and, like many others, should bravely seek help to get better.
"Many things get tangled up in life, like our shoelaces or hair. Sometimes our necklaces or the hoses in your backyard. It's really frustrating. This story is about when feelings and emotions get tangled up, hard things happen in life, and you don't feel good inside. This talks about what to do when that happens."
Jamie, a partner of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) chapter in Louisiana, aims to eliminate the stigma of seeking help.

The author shares, "Children need to see that we have a closer connection to our planet than we realize. We wouldn't even exist without it. So I wrote this little rap, it says, 'Let's give credit where credit is due. Without the Sun, there wouldn't be me or you!' We have to plant the seed in children at an early age that we are stewards of the environment and must take care of our planet."
Mrs. Fisher adds that she wasn't planning to become an author but knew that pursuing her passion would benefit many. "Science is intimidating, so you have to make it fun and in rhymes to get a child's attention. Being an author wasn't on my bucket list, but God had other plans for me to continue to promote literacy. And this is a gift for me to continue my passion for science and my love for teaching."

✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
Fighting parents. A pestering sister. Making mistakes. For this frustrated boy, trying to be good all the time is exhausting. When he tries to escape it all by running away, will he find the peace he is looking for?
Artfully written by Marianne Cooper and featuring her dreamlike and painterly illustrations, the picture book The Runaway conveys that running away from our big feelings is never the answer.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Marianne Cooper wrote stories even before she could learn to write. At five years old, she would draw pictures and save her stories on a portable recorder. In her book The Runaway, she shares how she brought the words and pictures together in a not so usual way. Marianne shares, "The funniest thing is how I wrote this story. Because I knew how it would be in my head, I did the illustrations and painted everything first. Then I went back and wrote the words to match pictures, which is the opposite of how most people get the manuscripts done first."
The Runaway is a precious book that gently addresses the sometimes-hopeless feeling of anxiety and was inspired by a child who experiences this. Marianne hopes her young readers will come away from her book, understanding that anxiety comes in all shapes and forms and can happen to people of all ages.
Marianne believes a good picture book is one that captures the reader's attention from the very beginning, and whose storytelling is visually supported by its illustrations. She wants to impart a lesson that, while running away from problems is never the answer, discussion and imagining them a different way can help. She hopes her words make a difference to children and that her illustrations bring them joy.
When she's not writing and illustrating thought-provoking picture books for children, Marianne enjoys reading, painting, and hanging out with her husband and four children. She lives with her family and two dogs, three cats, two guinea pigs and a handful of hermit crabs, in Virginia. The Runaway is her debut children's book.

In this episode, we will read Harper Counts Her Blessings
with Kristi Guillory Reid.
✅ ABOUT THE STORY:
At the end of a seemingly ordinary day, four-year-old Harper doesn't think that she has much to be thankful for. Fortunately, her loving parents are there to point out all the wonderful things that happen each day that she should cherish. Harper Counts Her Blessings shows children the importance of taking the time each day as a family to reflect upon their blessings and to thank God.
✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Since she was a little girl, Kristi Guillory Reid has had a penchant for books. An accomplished attorney and public policy strategist, she adds the title "children's book author" to her resume with her first book, Harper Counts Her Blessings.
She considers becoming an author came out of sheer necessity. "I wanted to have a book that represents what my daughter sees every day in an African American family and possesses a positive message. When I wrote the book, Harper was about four and a half. She's now eight. We were beginning bedtime routines and saying prayers at night. So I thought this would be a great thing to write as we're teaching what we'd like her to do, but also some other children may find it helpful as well and want to do this inside more family conversations about thankfulness, which you can have any time from breakfast to dinner, igniting gratefulness in the family table, making families talk more and making us all realize that take, we shouldn't take anything for granted."

There's just nothing about women and black women in business that children can relate to. I also wanted to have different industries and generations represented."
Two of Gwen's books have been nominated for NAACP Image Awards: 101 Scholarship Applications: What It Takes to Obtain a Debt-Free College Education in 2015, and You Are Wonderfully Made: 12 Life-Changing Principles for Teen Girls to Embrace in 2016. The latter was a book she co-authored with her daughter, Sylvia, who is a graduate of North Carolina Central University, an HBCU.
As a publicist, Gwen provides a wide range of marketing services, primarily for clients within the book industry. She co-owns Cushcity.com with her husband, Willie. Cushcity.com provides retail and literary marketing services within the African-American market.
