When Alisa's new baby sister, Claire, is born, she has no idea what to expect. Will Claire be nice? Will Alisa have to give away all of her toys? Will Mommy and Daddy stop loving Alisa because baby Claire is here?

“New Baby Coming, New Baby Here” is the perfect way to help your child understand that when your family grows, so does the amount of love in your home. 

Her daughters inspired the author Sheryl Smiley-Oliphant to create this book. "I was inspired to write this book after I was pregnant with my second daughter. I wanted a way to teach her and show her the different changes that will be happening to the family and how her life will change with a baby for good and maybe sometimes not so good at times, but it's good to educate her and so that she is ready to be the best big sister ever." 

✅ ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Sheryl Smiley-Oliphant is a Theater Teacher, Director, and Children's Book Author. In addition, she runs the YouTube channel Activity Author, where she creates simple and practical learning activities using quick preparation and household items that keep kids entertained with creative activities and games. 

She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband and daughters Kimberly and Malia.

In this episode, we are going to read “Amy's Travels” By Kathryn Starke.

✅ ABOUT THE STORY:

“Amy's Travels” tells the story of a globe-trotting girl who visits all seven continents on earth. The book’s main character was born in Peru and traveled to Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America and introduces Antarctica and Australia as well.

First published in 2006, writer Kathryn Starke shares that the character is based on her real life college roommate who had a very exciting story to tell. “Her father worked for the government and she traveled clearly all around the world. So this is Amy's true story that she gave me to write. And the reason I decided to write it is I am a former elementary school teacher and I taught first and second and third grade. And the seven continents are part of our curriculum in second grade. I could not find one story, a fictional story that took us to all of the continents. I found a nonfiction story for everyone, but that stubborn factual book I had to bring home from the library. And I found that we learn best through story. So I told the story of Amy to my students just using the map and using her journey. And when I realized that it not only made the children connect to other locations, but understood we have greater landmasses than just our community and our country. Then I turned it into a book with Amy's permission.”

Stay-at-home mom Jessica Parham was inspired to write "Good to Be Me" because of her children. "I have three kids, and they're at the ages where they ask a lot of questions. My younger daughter has blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin and has my shorter stature. And my older daughter is very tall. She has an olive complexion like me, brown hair, brown eyes. And one of my daughters wears glasses and has a little bit of a speech thing, which I find very cute, but they were starting to get a little bit insecure about their differences in each other. 

And then they started asking why certain friends had different skin colors and why certain friends might be missing a limb, and we have a lot of different types of friends and a diverse group and community. And so they're asking a lot of why. And so I couldn't find a book that was allowing them to have conversations with me. I didn't want an author to tell my kids what to think. And so I wanted them to be able to ask questions. So I decided to write the book that I couldn't find."

"The performance starts, she hips and she pops, but she seems a bit off beat, her body is tired from all the practice required, but she can't accept defeat." Unfortunately, Bitsy Bop did not win, but she went home learning the most important lesson in her life. The author, Takisha Payne, who is a mother to 3 children, hopes to pass the message through this book: "Whatever your dreams, stick with it. You're not always going to win. But even if you fail, there's always tomorrow, and you can try again".

Takisha Payne is a writer, host and motivational speaker. 

Her first book “Bipsy Bop Wants To Hippity Hop” was published in January 2013 that tells the story of Bipsy Bop, a child understanding and using her God-given talents. Although her mother is skeptical, she never loses focus and, along with encouraging words from her father, she excels with her hip hop dancing skills.

The follow-up book “Bipsy Bop Hold Your Head Up High” was released in May 2020. It follows the story of the spunky main character as she turns ten and tests her dancing skills in a whole new level as she joins a competition by a major television franchise.

How do you talk to your child about their big feelings while dealing with your own? How do you encourage hope as you hear devastating news every day? On nights when you can't sleep, and neither do your little ones — 

here's a book that's worth reading:"Momma, Can I Sleep With You Tonight?" by Jenny Delacruz.

This book provides a comforting conversation dealing with frustration and fear in these challenging times. “Mama, can I sleep with you tonight? My whole life feels like a bad dream. I feel too many feelings. They're all twisted up”. 

For parents and guardians, the book expresses that it is okay to tell children that it is natural to have these feelings but what is more important is to have them understand that they are supported and are not alone. “I'm still in shock. Our lives changed so quickly. The world we knew just stopped. But now we have to work together to live in this new one”. 

You can find a helpful resource for mental health tips towards the end of the book, where the author, also as a licensed counselor, talks about the stages of grief and free tools that you can access online. This book is also available in Spanish and French.

Jenny Delacruz is a licensed professional counselor of over 10 years of experience.  She has an M.S in Counseling and minored in African & African American Studies. 

Her desire to have the freedom to create diverse books led her to start Cobbs Creek Publishing. She believes that providing unique and relatable literature will empower children to make meaning about themselves and grow up to make a difference in the world.

Dionne Bowen is a proud mom, teacher, educational specialist, and children's fiction writer. Dionne first wrote Nia's story: Simply Beautiful Me'' in 2015 while pregnant with her firstborn Nia.

After two years, Dionne lost heart to continue the book with her daughter's sudden passing. Until her second daughter, Johari, was born, she mustered the strength to finish the story and deliver the message.

With her books and launching Simply Beautiful World, Dionne aims to provide an online platform where all little black and brown girls would be uplifted and celebrated. She considers these as her legacy to her daughters and all children from ethnic backgrounds to consistently see examples of positive black role models in works of fiction or within the media.
