In this episode of Reading Through the Bible Together, we’re reading 1 Kings 16–22, where the northern kingdom spirals deeper into corruption and God raises up a powerful prophetic voice.
A series of wicked kings rise in Israel, culminating in Ahab, who does more evil than those before him. Under his leadership, idolatry intensifies, especially through the influence of Jezebel. Baal worship spreads, and the nation drifts further from the Lord.
Into that darkness steps Elijah. He confronts Ahab, calls down drought, and stands alone on Mount Carmel against the prophets of Baal. When fire falls from heaven, it makes one thing unmistakably clear: the Lord alone is God.
Yet even after such a dramatic moment, the people’s hearts remain unstable. Ahab continues in compromise, ignoring God’s word even when it is clearly spoken through prophets. The section ends with Ahab’s downfall, exactly as God had said.
These chapters remind us that no amount of external evidence can change a heart that refuses to listen. God speaks clearly, acts powerfully, and calls His people back, but stubborn hearts resist.
And once again, we are pointed forward to Jesus, the greater Prophet, who not only calls people back to God but transforms hearts so they can truly follow Him.
If you haven’t read 1 Kings 16–22 yet, pause and do that now, then come back and let’s read it together.
