  • Podcast Bonus Episode 64: Nomadland
Welcome to Reading With Libraries! Check out our show notes page, for all the links to the books we have to share. We are taking a small detour from our usual book group structure to look at some of the pop culture going on around us. And of course: we share related books! As we always do: grab your book, grab a beverage, and maybe get your streaming subscription warmed up because you are going to want to see this! Today we are chatting about the new movie coming out tomorrow: Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand. In this movie "After losing everything in the Great Recession, a woman embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad." This movie is based on the book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century, by Jessica Bruder. "From the beet fields of North Dakota to the campgrounds of California to Amazon's CamperForce program in Texas, employers have discovered a new, low-cost labor pool, made up largely of transient older adults. These invisible casualties of the Great Recession have taken to the road by the tens of thousands in RVs and modified vans, forming a growing community of nomads."

  • Bonus Episode 63: The Mandalorian
We are taking a small detour from our usual book group structure to look at some of the pop culture going on around us. And of course: we share related books! As we always do: grab your book, grab a beverage, and maybe get your streaming subscription warmed up because you are going to want to see this! Today we are chatting about the very popular TV series: The Mandalorian. Even if you have never seen this, you have almost certainly seen one of the stars of this show: Baby Yoda! And of course, for Star Wars purists, it would be heresy to call him by this factually incorrect name. In Season One, he was referred to as The Child; and in Season Two we do learn his name: Grogu [pronounced Grow-Goo] And this is part of the Star Wars universe, building on the space opera of those stories. So, what is a space opera? Wikipedia says:"Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, melodramatic adventure, interplanetary battles, chivalric romance, and risk-taking."

We are a book group podcast, looking at a new genre each week. We enjoy a beverage that matches the theme of the episode, we talk about some books we like with our Guest Hosts, and we share resources for finding more books. We work in a library system, and many of our guests work in libraries - so we have a lot of fun books to share!
