Richard Rotanz, who served as deputy commander of New York City’s Emergency Operations Center, recounts his experience responding to the attacks and helping coordinate emergency operations amid unprecedented destruction. Rotanz offers a firsthand perspective on the enormous challenges facing New York City that day and the remarkable response of firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and ordinary Americans who rushed toward danger to help others.

Zere also speaks with Stephen Siller Jr., the son of fallen FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller. On September 11, Stephen Siller had finished his shift when he learned that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. Determined to help, he made his way toward Lower Manhattan and ultimately gave his life in the line of duty. His sacrifice became the inspiration for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which continues his legacy by supporting America’s fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military service members, veterans, and their families.

That mission comes to life through Scott Nokes, a recipient of a Tunnel to Towers Smart Home. Nokes shares his story and discusses the profound impact the foundation’s support has had on his life, illustrating how the legacy of September 11 continues through acts of service and a commitment to those who have sacrificed for the country.

Former Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York President Stephen Cassidy joins Zere to reflect on the FDNY’s extraordinary losses on September 11 and the enduring brotherhood of New York City’s firefighters. Cassidy discusses the courage displayed that morning, the lasting toll on the firefighting community, and the responsibility to ensure future generations understand what happened and remember those who never came home.

Through these deeply personal stories, this special coverage looks beyond the events of a single day to examine a legacy that has endured for a quarter century. It is a tribute to the victims, the heroes who ran toward danger, the families who carried their memories forward, and the Americans who came together in the aftermath.
