2011 New York City Lecture

Frances Luella Welsing was an American psychiatrist and well-known proponent of Black supremacist melanin theory. Her 1970 essay, The Cress Theory of Color-Confrontation and Racism, offered her interpretation of what she described as the origins of white supremacy culture.

As the Wheatley story goes she was born in West Africa.  Phillis was kidnapped by slave traders and brought to New England in 1761. From a young age it was clear that Phillis was an extraordinary person. She mastered English, Latin, Greek and English literature at a time when enslaved people could be condemned to death for learning. As she entered her teen years, she became a writer. Back in the early 1770s, as she sat in this church, in these pews, Phillis scoured the holy scripture for the words she needed to give voice to her visions and to spark her imagination. "My Nigerian great-grandfather sold slaves," was a big story years ago on BBC publication. Now, times have changed, and we have a Nigerian Comedian from the tribe of Igbo who said that he and his family never talked about the slave trade and he never heard of it until he came to the Americas.  Oddly enough, many Black Americans never heard of that story neither from our families, so where did we get all these slave stories from?   We dig deep to uncover the foundation and connections of this madness. We traveled back in time and pulled the wool off the old personalities and properly connect those personalities of the past, to those of today, and we show and prove that it's the same ole same ole. Join us as we have a conversation about the Black Americans holding a title of African Americans simply because the majority culture said so. It's time we descendants of slaves and  indigenous Negroes of america,  let go of the term "African American" and go back to calling ourselves Black - with a capital B.  Modern America is home now to millions of immigrants who were born in Africa. Their cultures and identities are split between Africa and the United States. 

They have last names like Onwughalu and Senkofa. They speak languages like Wolof, Twi, Yoruba and Hausa, and speak English with an accent. They were raised on African cuisine, music, dance and dress styles, customs and family dynamics. Their children often speak or at least understand their parents' native language.  Living descendants of slaves and negro Indians in America neither knew and cant trace a single African ancestors nor even have elder relatives who knew them. Most of us worship in Christian churches. Our cuisine is more southern U.S. than Senegalese. Starting with ragtime and jazz, we gave America intoxicating musical beats based on African conceptions of rhythm, but with melody and harmony based on Western traditions.

Join us as we have a conversation about the work of James J. Rawls, as he describes, the complexion and features of the California Indians as the same as Africans.   When the first Anglo-Americans visited California early in the nineteenth century, the future state was still a remote province of the Spanish empire. Early visitors, filled with a sense of American’s Manifest Destiny, described the missionary priests and their Indian converts in terms of the Black Legend of Spanish abuse of native peoples. Later, when the Anglos settled in California and assumed the life-style of the Mexican rancheros, they viewed the Indians as a primitive laboring class, docile and exploitable. Finally, after 1849, the gold rush brought hundreds of thousands of new white immigrants, who treated the primitive "diggers" simply as threats to their own prosperity and security.
