ACRE Leadership Council member and gkhouses Founder/Director of Market Development Matthew Whitaker joins ACRE Research Coordinator Stuart Norton to discuss single-family property management, finding opportunity in the recession, training millennials, and setting big hairy audacious goals.
gkhouses started at the beginning of the 2008 economic crisis by default. When the bottom fell out of the residential housing market Matthew was left holding 30 rental houses that he wanted to sell, but couldn’t. So he set out to find a property manager with similar beliefs and management preferences as to his own. It was not a successful hunt. Later that year, Matthew started gkhouses. As word spread, other industry friends brought gkhouses properties they couldn’t sell. The gkhouses reputation for excellence began to spread. Since that time, gkhouses has grown to become the largest property manager in Birmingham and a regional company with offices in Nashville, Chattanooga, Little Rock, Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins. During the time between 2008 and 2019, the gkhouses team grew as well. From three to over 40 team members dedicated to providing owners the best property management experience around.
