A five-year-old stood beside the backyard fence, holding a handful of weeds and chatting with someone his father couldn’t see from the kitchen window. He assumed it was the neighbor. But when he went outside, the neighbor said the boy had been talking to himself.

Nothing especially strange about that—until his son explained who had been keeping him company.

The boy called his visitor an angel. He wasn’t scared, confused, or particularly impressed. To him, it had simply been someone to talk to. To his father, one small detail in that conversation suggested something much harder to dismiss. It reached back to a friendship, a loss, and a name chosen long before that summer afternoon.

When a family moves into an apartment inside an old mansion, their three-year-old son quickly settles in.

Then he starts talking about the little boy on the stairs.

At first, his parents assume he has invented an imaginary friend. But the boy seems oddly specific about where his new companion stays, and he begins leaving toys for him near the front door.

Then other people start seeing him too.

Shortly after her mother died, she was staying in the family home with her stepfather when something strange crossed her line of sight.

From the room where she was watching television, she saw a bald older man in a white shirt walk directly into the kitchen. Her first thought was that it must have been her stepfather.

She had always been incredibly close to her grandmother, but as she got older, life changed and they drifted apart.

When her grandmother became seriously ill, she visited her in the hospital and told her she loved her—but never managed to say everything she wished she had. A few days later, her grandmother died.

After losing her beloved dog of nearly fifteen years, she was certain she wasn’t ready for another. Then she saw a Facebook post about an older dog whose owner had died and whose family couldn’t keep him. She couldn’t bear the thought of him losing his person and being sent to a shelter, so she brought him home.

During his first week, he began greeting someone she couldn’t see. He stared toward the front door, wagged his tail, then followed an invisible presence across the room and settled beside it on the couch. At first, she blamed memories and old routines.

At six or seven, he thought the dolls in his grandmother’s spare bedroom were the scariest things in the house. Then he woke one night and stepped into the hallway. A man stood beside the kitchen, glowing faintly blue-white, his body just transparent enough to make it clear this wasn’t another relative getting up in the night.

At least, that was what the terrified boy believed.

Hospitals are filled with strangers, so when an older woman sits beside a worried daughter in a waiting room and offers a few comforting words, there seems to be nothing unusual about it.

Until her father describes the visitor who came to see him in his hospital room.
