Some cities carry their history more quietly than others. Tacoma isn’t one of them.

Through Pretty Gritty Tours, guide Chris Staudinger explores the darker side of Tacoma’s past—stories tied to locations where something doesn’t feel entirely settled.

From the wooded paths of Point Defiance Park, where visitors report an unexplained presence, to the historic Foss Seaport, where activity has been described after hours, the city offers more than just local history.

And just outside Tacoma, in Bucoda, a small-town gym built in 1939 has its own reputation—along with a doll some believe carries a presence of its own.

These aren’t isolated stories. They’re part of a larger pattern—places where the past doesn’t seem entirely finished, and where history may still be finding ways to be heard.

In an old Swedish farmhouse, shadows passing through rooms were familiar enough that the family rarely worried about them. They believed the grandparents were still there, moving through a home that had changed around them. Even a doorway that no longer existed seemed to remain part of someone’s route.

But the house was also home to a son whose illness meant he needed care around the clock. Assistants stayed overnight, and some began having experiences that were much harder to take in stride.

Hammering in the darkness. Sleep interrupted by someone who wasn’t there. The family might have been comfortable with their ghosts, but one assistant refused to work another night.

Were these encounters part of the farmhouse’s familiar haunting—or was someone trying to get the caregivers’ attention for a reason the living hadn’t understood?

An overnight nurse at a rehabilitation facility notices something that should not be there: a small child standing alone in one of the oldest hallways in the building.

The doors are locked. No visitors have brought a child inside. And when the nurse approaches, the dark figure seems to disappear into a resident’s room.

She tries to convince herself that working overnight has played tricks on her eyes. Then she sees the child again—outside a different room. This time, someone else sees it too.

Before long, an unsettling question begins to form. Is the child simply another ghost haunting a building that once served as a hospital?

Or does it appear outside certain doors for a reason?

The basement offices looked like any other workplace: cubicles, paperwork, restrooms across the hall. The hospital was only eight years old, and nothing about the space felt particularly unsettling. Even with the morgue nearby, ghosts weren’t something the staff expected to deal with.

Then a coworker stayed until eleven one night and heard activity in a restroom no one was using.

At first, everyone laughed. But when strange things began happening during the workday, the jokes became harder to make. From their desks, they could see who went into the restrooms. There wasn’t always someone there to account for the sounds.

One employee joked that she could tolerate a ghost—as long as it left the lights alone. What happened next made that remark uncomfortable to remember. Had she simply named the next coincidence, or had something in the office heard her?

For a year, their new home outside Chicago felt like the fresh start they’d wanted. The children settled in, life found its rhythm, and their mother began to relax. After a lifetime of paranormal experiences, she wondered whether that part of her life might finally be behind her.

Then she caught a reflection in the kitchen window.

Her children loved to scare her, so she was ready to catch one of them sneaking up behind her. But the shape in the doorway didn’t belong to anyone who should have been awake—or home. And it kept returning.

At first, it slipped away whenever she turned toward it. Then it began lingering, growing bolder, moving farther into the house. What had changed in a home that once felt so peaceful—and why was the shadow heading toward her sleeping children?

A spontaneous stop at Fort Scott National Historic Site was supposed to be nothing more than a break during a drive through Kansas. While exploring the old barracks, one visitor struck up a casual conversation with a man dressed in a period military uniform. He answered her questions, joked with her and seemed exactly like what she assumed he was: a reenactor working at the fort.

She might never have thought about him again if she hadn’t made an offhand comment before leaving.

The response she received changed the entire encounter—and left her wondering whether the perfectly ordinary man she had been standing just a few feet away from was ordinary at all.

Because if you can have a conversation with a ghost without realizing it...how many times could it happen without anyone ever knowing?

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE!

Joe De Hoyos had been fascinated by the paranormal since childhood, devouring ghost books and late-night television specials while wondering what it would be like to actually experience something unexplained.

Years later, Joe, his wife, and their children moved into a quaint fixer-upper—and it didn’t take long before strange things began happening. Lights seemed to react during moments of tension. Shadow figures appeared as emotions ran high. Their dog repeatedly barked at something the rest of the family couldn’t see. Over time, Joe began wondering whether the activity was simply taking place around them—or somehow reacting to the energy of the people and animals living inside the house.

Can spirits interact with more than just people? Can emotions fuel paranormal activity? And can a house itself somehow hold—or even amplify—the energy created within its walls?

Today on The Grave Talks, a conversation with Joe De Hoyos about the strange activity that turned a childhood fascination with ghosts into something much more personal.

For years, she was convinced her older stepsister was sneaking into the basement at night just to scare her. The whispered voice outside her bedroom sounded exactly like Tara, quietly calling her name and asking her to come into the hallway. It seemed like just another cruel prank between kids who didn’t get along.

Then one night, Tara wasn’t home.

The voice came anyway.

Even the family dog heard it, staring at the closed door and growling at whoever—or whatever—was waiting on the other side. From then on, she stopped answering and stopped opening the door.

But whatever was in that basement apparently wasn’t finished trying to get her attention. And eventually, it found another voice to use.

He had spent years practicing alone in the church after hours and knew every creak, pipe, and odd sound the old building could make.

Then one night, the piano played a note by itself.

At first, he tried to explain it away. Old instruments could resonate. Strange acoustics could make sounds seem closer than they were. Maybe something outside had carried into the sanctuary.

But the piano did it again.

Before long, the unexplained notes began to feel less random and more deliberate, as though someone unseen were listening while he practiced.

And every time the music stopped, he found himself waiting to see whether the church would answer.

She lived alone, and someone seemed to be walking through her attic in the middle of the night. So she called the police. A young officer arrived to check the space above her ceiling and find out whether anyone had gotten inside.

What he found should have been reassuring.

But as he examined the attic, the footsteps she described became harder to account for. There was a problem with the idea of someone moving around up there—something she hadn’t known when she made the call. His explanation frightened her more than the original noise.

Then she asked whether it could be paranormal.

He had come to investigate a possible intruder. Now he was facing a different question: what could he tell a woman who was still hearing someone in a place where no person should have been able to walk?
