For years, strange things happened in his father’s townhouse that were easy enough to explain away individually.

It began with three slow knocks from inside the wall behind Ava’s bed. Then her phone moved across the desk, books flew from a shelf, doors slammed on their own, and eventually her parents watched her mattress begin to shake beneath her.

Working alone at the end of a quiet hallway on a college campus, she occasionally had the feeling that something else was there. Then one afternoon, she heard heels clicking toward her office and watched a shadow pass the window in her door.

Working late at a century-old Dallas hotel wasn't unusual for an account manager whose company helped clean up after large events. He knew many of the overnight employees, so when he encountered a familiar waiter coming down a narrow stairway after a wedding, there was nothing particularly strange about it.

The man seemed distracted and didn't respond when spoken to, but it had been a long night. They even bumped shoulders as they passed.
