One quiet morning, a mother settled onto the couch with a cup of coffee while her children's play tent still sat in the living room from the weekend.

They had grown up hearing the legend of the old bridge outside town. Stop your car nearby, turn off the engine, put it in neutral...and supposedly something would make it move.

So one Friday night, three teenage friends decided to find out for themselves. At first, everything seemed easy enough to explain. The road probably sloped. Darkness made it difficult to judge distance. A little uneven pavement could account for almost anything.

Then the car moved in a way none of them expected. Something struck beneath it. One of them saw a figure standing on the bridge. And suddenly, all three were overwhelmed by the same certainty:

They needed to leave. They listened.

Only later would they learn what happened at that bridge just minutes after they drove away.

She had grown up in a family where stories about spirits weren’t considered particularly unusual, but living in her first apartment brought experiences of her own.

It began with sounds coming from the kitchen. She would hear cabinets opening and closing even when no one appeared to be using them. Then her roommate began noticing something different.

She was only a teenager when she began having dreams that felt unusually vivid, although at first she had no reason to believe they meant anything.

Then something happened involving someone close to her, and parts of it seemed disturbingly familiar.

Not long afterward, she experienced another moment that stopped her in her tracks. After her parents divorced, moving into her grandmother's old house was supposed to be a fresh start.

For a while, life settled into a new routine. Then her mother remarried, and everything inside the house seemed to change. Shadows darted into empty bedrooms. An unfamiliar man dressed completely in white quietly walked past her doorway in the middle of the night. She woke to someone calling her name and was overwhelmed by the feeling that she was being watched.

The house was brand new, so strange noises were easy to dismiss at first.

But one night, after waking to the sound of loud, steady breathing, a young boy assumed it was his little brother sleeping nearby. When he looked, the crib was empty. The breathing continued anyway.

He searched every corner of the room until he realized the sound was coming from the foot of his bed. There was no one there.

A week later, his parents woke to the exact same sound in their own bedroom. They searched the room just as he had, and the moment they announced that nothing was there...the breathing stopped.

When her family moved into the house, they had already heard that previous residents never seemed to stay very long. Someone even joked that the place might be haunted. Before long, the joke became harder to laugh off.
