Real Ghost Stories Online

This is Part Two of our conversation.

Rob and Teresa Heckenlively never set out to own a haunted hotel. During a family vacation to Osceola, Missouri, they called a realtor simply because they wanted to see inside the long-vacant Commercial Hotel. They weren't looking to buy a historic landmark—but by the end of the tour, that's exactly what they wanted to do.

Built in 1867 after the Civil War's Sacking of Osceola destroyed an earlier hotel on the property, the Commercial Hotel has welcomed famous guests including President Harry Truman and brothers Jesse and Frank James. Today, many believe not every guest has ever truly checked out.

As Rob and Teresa began bringing the historic hotel back to life, they discovered they weren't the only ones invested in its future. Before the restoration was even complete, Rob had an encounter so unsettling it kept him away from the hotel for months. Since then, guests have reported heavy footsteps, voices in empty hallways, shadow figures, and other unexplained encounters that continue to fuel the hotel's haunted reputation.

Today on The Grave Talks, Rob and Teresa share the remarkable story of rescuing the Commercial Hotel—and what it's like living with whatever may have never left.

Her roommate had warned her from the beginning that someone else seemed to share the apartment. Not something frightening. Just a quiet little boy who occasionally made his presence known.

She never gave it much thought until one afternoon while the two of them were talking in the old sewing room. As they discussed the apartment's strange history, she began feeling an unusual warmth spread across her back.

Curious, she asked a simple question. "Do you know where he is right now?"

The answer came immediately. And the feeling disappeared just as fast.

When she found her mother's unfinished family tree tucked away in an old box, she never imagined it would lead her to a forgotten country cemetery two hours from home. Armed with a map and a handful of names, she set out to find relatives she'd only ever known through faded records and old photographs.

Instead, she met someone who seemed to know the cemetery—and the people buried there—better than anyone possibly could. He guided her through winding paths, shared stories of the community, and led her directly to the ancestor she'd come looking for. But just as she turned to thank him...

...he was gone.

She returned to that cemetery again and again, hoping to understand what had happened. The answers never came. But every visit left her wondering whether some people never really leave the places they loved most.

At fourteen years old, borrowing face cream from her grandmother's bedroom was part of an ordinary morning routine.

She walked into the room, saw her grandmother quietly ironing clothes by the window, said hello, grabbed what she needed, and headed back down the short hallway.

Then her grandmother called to her from the kitchen. Confused, she turned around expecting to find her still standing in the bedroom.

The room was empty.

Even years later, she still can't explain who—or what—she saw that morning.

Working the overnight shift in a psychiatric hospital means hearing stories most people would rather dismiss.

One hallway in particular had a reputation. Patients often refused to sleep there, insisting something was watching them from the corner of their rooms. Staff chalked it up to nightmares, anxiety, or the illnesses that brought them there in the first place.

Then one night, during a routine hallway check, the sounds began. A heavy door clicked open. Footsteps followed behind her.

And a patient's impossible description of a shadow in the corner suddenly didn't seem so impossible anymore.

This is a Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! PART TWO

Step inside the Old Lavaca County Jail, where the past doesn’t just linger—it reacts. This long-abandoned fortress once held murderers, drifters, and outlaws, but time hasn’t emptied its cells the way history suggests it should have.

Heavy iron doors have been known to move on their own. Footsteps echo through the cellblock when no one is there. Investigators have reported strange sounds in the infirmary, keys rattling without a source, and shadowy movement that refuses to be explained.

Among the most chilling moments are the recordings—voices that seem to come from nowhere, including one that pleads to be released. Certain areas of the jail feel heavier than others, particularly the infamous stairwell and solitary confinement cell, where equipment fails and tension builds without warning.

Whatever remains inside the Old Lavaca County Jail doesn’t seem at rest. And for those who enter, it quickly becomes clear—some sentences may never have ended.

It began when his oldest son was barely old enough to speak.

Without warning, the little boy would point behind his father and quietly warn him about "the mean man." At first, it sounded like the kind of thing young children sometimes imagine. Even after strange things happened around the house, the family hoped moving away would leave it all behind.

It didn't.

Years later, his young daughter began talking to someone named Mitch. Then she described him.

The clothes. The presence. The fear. It was the same man his older brother had been talking about years before... even though no one had ever told her the story.

Bethany never set out to make a ghost documentary. She wanted to preserve the history of an old hospital that had once served generations of families before it disappeared forever. Along with her small film crew, she spent weeks interviewing retired doctors, nurses, and staff members who remembered the building as a place of healing, heartbreak, and countless lives forever changed.

As filming began inside the abandoned hospital, former employees shared one more piece of its history—stories of unexplained footsteps, voices in empty hallways, and encounters that no one had ever been able to explain. The crew didn't go looking for any of it.

But by the time production wrapped, the hospital had quietly added one more story to its own history... and this time, they were part of it.
