Your friend walks up to you and says, "I have something to tell you!" Just like that, you're a part of some juicy gossip. It's one of the most hurtful things that we do to another person and yet we can't seem to stop.
In this episode we first discover the difference between rumors and gossip. Rumors are pieces of information that have not been verified but are also not intended to hurt the target. Gossip, on the other hand, is scandalous unverified information that is meant to hurt the intended target.
We also discuss the 3 main questions surrounding gossip.
Why do people gossip anyway?
To feel better, be accepted, get attention, gain power, get revenge, and relieve boredom.
How does gossip impact the target?
Loss in self-confidence, declining grades or work performance, poor relationships, drug and alcohol use, depression, suicide.
How do you deal with gossip if you are the intended target?
Identify the source, avoid dwelling, talk about it with a trusted adult, do not retaliate, move forward, reduce the likelihood that it will happen again.
Parenting Tip: Listen to your kids when they complain about "friends" being mean to them by providing them with the best advice for how to handle the situation without violence. Always remind them that its ok to walk away from people or situations that are unhealthy.
