The ski season has officially begun, kicked off by Labor Day sales and swaps that will soon be in full swing. Be aware that the ski market is a constantly shifting target, with lots of ways to buy used gear that really doesn't fit you. This cautionary note is intended to help my Dear Listeners to avoid the pitfalls of bargain hunting.

Dr. Jasper Shealy has been studying ski injuries for the past 50 years, and continues to be active in the field. Later this spring he will present his updated research on skier fatalities, titled Snow Sports Deaths in the US: 1974 through 2019, at the International Society for Skiing Safety. His insights into the causes and prevention of ski injuries are grounded in an unparalleled career in the field. He is well worth listening to.

In this week’s Revelation, posted as a podcast a scant two days ago, I cited two extraordinary cases of skiers who took a huge leap of faith in order to obtain the best bootfit possible with their cantankerous feet. While we’re on the subject of blind faith, I thought it an opportune time to dig deeper into the subject of trust and how it relates to skiing.
