From the plague that tore through Athens during the Peloponnesian War… to the one that halved the Roman Empire… from the Black Death that turned medieval Europe into a graveyard… to the global chaos of the 1918 flu, and the modern shadows of SARS and COVID-19—pandemics have shaped the world far more than we like to admit.
Far from being rare catastrophes, plagues are relentless visitors—toppling empires, collapsing economies, igniting fear, and rewriting the rules of society.
In this powerful episode, join Keith as he traces the terrifying legacy of history’s deadliest epidemics—exploring how disease has repeatedly disrupted the world order, sparked rebellion, reshaped cities, and brought rulers to their knees.
This isn’t just a story of illness—it’s the story of how humanity survives, adapts… and what we lose along the way.

I often worry about my listeners staying up too late with my regular episodes—some of those stories are a little too intense for drifting off to sleep. So I created DreamReads—a quieter space, where the stories are a little gentler, the tone more peaceful, and the world’s worries fade into the background.
These are stories to lull you into sleep—not just to entertain, but to ease your mind. They’re drawn from some of my favourite books by some of my favourite authors, told softly and slowly to help you unwind.
In tonight’s episode, I’m introducing you to Dracula—the original gothic classic by Bram Stoker, first published in 1897.
Far from the city, in the shadowy corners of Transylvania, lies a castle—vast, ancient, and filled with secrets. When Jonathan Harker, an English solicitor, arrives to assist the enigmatic Count Dracula with legal matters, he finds himself drawn into a world of soft whispers, locked doors, and strange disappearances. There is charm in the Count’s manner… but something deeper and darker beneath it.
So now, wherever you are—take a deep breath… let your body relax… close your eyes… and allow this timeless tale to carry you gently into the night.
Sweet dreams.

June 18, 1815 — the fields outside a quiet Belgian village erupted into one of the most decisive and brutal battles in history.
The Battle of Waterloo wasn’t just the end of Napoleon’s reign—it was the moment Europe held its breath. Thunderous cannon fire, desperate cavalry charges, smoke-choked skies, and rain-soaked trenches set the stage for a final clash between destiny and downfall. On one side, the legendary Napoleon Bonaparte. On the other, the iron resolve of the Duke of Wellington and the relentless force of Blücher’s Prussians.
What unfolded that day would change the course of Europe forever.
In this gripping episode, Keith dives into the chaos and courage of Waterloo—reading firsthand accounts from the soldiers who lived through it, and joined by special guest Dr. Zac White, one of the world’s leading experts on the Napoleonic Wars.
Prepare for strategy, blood, betrayal, and heroism—this is Waterloo as you’ve never heard it before.

For thousands of years, it’s captivated prophets, kings, scholars—and treasure hunters.

From its thunderous presence in ancient battles to its eerie disappearance from history, the Ark has inspired fear, obsession, and awe. And no one truly knows where it is… or if it still exists at all.
Join Keith as he opens the lid on one of history’s greatest enigmas—exploring the Ark’s creation, its mythic power, and the countless theories that have swirled around its vanishing for centuries.
This isn’t just a story of faith—it’s a story of danger, mystery, and the eternal human hunt for the divine.

For this second DreamReads episode, I’d like to invite you into the decadent, candlelit world of Oscar Wilde… and The Picture of Dorian Gray.
This timeless tale follows a young man named Dorian Gray—beautiful, charming, and untouched by age. When his portrait is painted by the devoted Basil Hallward, it captures more than just his likeness… it begins to reflect the truth of his soul. As Dorian falls under the spell of Lord Henry Wotton’s seductive philosophy of pleasure without consequence, he slips deeper into a life of indulgence and secrecy. But while Dorian’s face remains youthful and unmarked, the painting tells a different story—bearing the scars of his every vice, every cruelty, every betrayal.
It’s a story of beauty, temptation, and the quiet unraveling of a man who wanted to stay young forever.
So, wherever you are… take a deep breath, let the day fall away, and sink into the rich, haunting prose of Oscar Wilde. Close your eyes… and let the story begin.
Sweet dreams.

“To be a boy at one of these schools was to be both tyrant and slave.”
18th-century British public schools were meant to shape the leaders of empire—god-fearing, iron-willed, and unbreakable. But behind the ivy-covered walls lay something far darker.
These were pressure cookers of violence, chaos, and cruelty. Students rebelled with barricades and pistols. They took hostages, fought off armed militias, and assassinated the headmaster’s pets. Hazing rituals were brutal. Teaching was often appalling. And somehow, it was all called character building.
Even in the 20th century, little had changed. As late as 1979, one student was caned more than 630 times.
Keith knows this world intimately—because he lived it. At just nine years old, he was dropped at the headmaster’s office without warning, left to navigate a rigid, merciless system that hadn’t changed in centuries. What followed was a crash course in survival, tradition, and institutionalised cruelty.
In this searing episode, Keith peels back the curtain on Britain’s most elite and infamous schools—how they shaped boys into rulers, broke them in the process, and whether there’s any place left for them in today’s world.
This isn’t just history. It’s personal. And it’s time to talk.

I know some of you like to stay up late listening to my podcasts—but I also know that some of those episodes cover serious, sometimes heavy topics. And that’s not always the best way to drift off to sleep.
So I’ve created DreamReads—a quiet corner of the podcast made just for winding down. These are gentle, absorbing stories that won’t keep you up worrying about the world, but might just carry you off to sleep with a little wonder, warmth, and maybe even a touch of enlightenment.
In this first episode, I’d love to introduce you to one of my favourite authors, David Liss, and his gripping yet richly textured novel, A Conspiracy of Paper. Set in 18th-century London, it follows Benjamin Weaver—a former boxer turned private investigator—navigating the smoky streets and shadowy alleys of a city on the brink of modern finance. It’s a story of secrets, suspicion, and subtle intrigue.
So now, wherever you are—whether you’re tucked into bed, lying back on the sofa, or just looking for a few quiet moments—take a deep breath… close your eyes… and let the story begin.

Who was Lawrence of Arabia—and why does his legend still burn so brightly more than a century later?
Born Thomas Edward Lawrence, he was no ordinary soldier. Archaeologist, spy, warrior, and mythmaker, Lawrence plunged into the chaos of World War I and emerged a desert legend. With nothing but grit, vision, and a deep understanding of Arab culture, he united feuding tribes and waged a lightning war against the Ottoman Empire—turning the tide of history in the burning sands of the Middle East.
But was he a hero, a pawn, or something far more complicated?
Join Keith as he unpacks the astonishing life of T.E. Lawrence—from the brutal battles of the Arab Revolt to the soul-searching pages of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and the sweeping romance of Lawrence of Arabia. This is a story of ambition, identity, betrayal—and one man’s quest to reshape the world, only to be broken by it.
A myth in his own lifetime. A mystery ever since. This is Lawrence of Arabia.

In 1857, the empire cracked.
What the British called "The Indian Mutiny” was, to those who rose up, nothing less than the First War of Independence—a furious, bloody rebellion that turned fields into battlefields and cities into charnel houses. Sparked by long-simmering resentment and brutal injustices under East India Company rule, the uprising exploded into violence that would shake the very foundations of British imperial power.
From sepoys refusing orders to civilians taking up arms, to the savage reprisals that followed, the revolt would end centuries of Company dominance and give birth to something new—and no less ruthless: the British Raj.
In this searing episode, Keith traces the spark, the storm, and the aftermath. Was this rebellion inevitable? Could it have been prevented? And what does it reveal about the dark heart of colonial rule?
Join Keith for a gripping, emotional journey into one of the most pivotal—and haunting—events in the history of empire.

With the thunder of cannons at Plassey and Buxar, the East India Company didn’t just win battles—it seized a continent. Led by the cold and cunning Sir Robert Clive, a trading company became an empire in all but name.
What followed was not just governance, but domination. The Company ruled with profit as its god and power as its weapon—its flag flying over a land it was draining dry.
In this gripping episode, Keith dives into the brutal reality of Company Rule at its height in the early 19th century. Who were the men behind the ledgers and the muskets? What horrors were unleashed in the name of commerce? And how did a handful of merchants from London tighten their grip around the throat of a nation?
This is the story of ambition, betrayal, greed—and the true cost of empire.
