  • A Woman is Raised and a Man is Called (Acts 9:32 – 10:8) - Session 20

In this session we see a woman (Tabitha) raised from the dead, much to the amazement of the people mourning at her funeral. As a result, many believed on the Lord. Then we see a Cornelius, a Roman military officer, told to send for Peter so he could get a message. In both of these instances, we see God doing extraordinary things through ordinary people, a feat that He still does today.

This session also discusses translations, the Mosaic Law, God healing a paralyzed man, and the gospel going to the Gentiles.

•Does God notice when we fast, pray, and give?
•What about the person who goes through life and never hears about Jesus?

  • Saul’s Eyes Are Opened (Acts 9:17-31) - Session 19

Paul the apostle, originally named Saul, has met the glorified Jesus on the road to Damascus. In today’s session, we see a regular Christian, Ananias, sent to do one task to one man, Saul. Not only were his physical eyes opened, but his spiritual eyes are opened as well. Saul is already “brother Saul” which means that he was saved prior to when Ananias arrived.

We then see Saul immediately get up and begin reasoning with the Jews that Jesus is the Christ. We also see Barnabas be an encourager to a new believer, Saul.

    • At what point is Saul saved?
    • How can Saul be an example to us?
    • When we encourage others, what difference can we make in their lives?
    • Is there a distinction between baptism and filling of the Holy Spirit?

  • Obeying God Even When We Don’t Understand (Acts 9:8-16) - Session 18

God speaks to an average believer, Ananias, and tells him to go speak to one man. Ananias does not understand God’s purposes in this risky assignment but obeys anyway. Ananias does not know the significance of this assignment to go talk to only one man, yet it is of utmost importance. We also do not understand the significance of speaking to individuals.

We learn that when God directs us to do some ministry, He is also working on others to bring about a divine plan. We should therefore obey God because all tasks are significant, no matter how small they seem to us.

    • Is it hard to obey the Lord when we don’t understand what He is doing?
    • Does God ever ask us to do scary or risky things?
    • Does God ever destine us for suffering?

  • Divine Appointments: The Ethiopian Eunuch & Saul on the Damascus Road (Acts 8:25 – 9:7) - Session 17

God arranges two divine appointments. He first brings together Philip and a royal member of the Ethiopian court, then He finds Saul on the road to Damascus. In both cases we see God working to bring about His will in dramatic but different circumstances. In typical fashion,  We also learn of the person of the Holy Spirt and what His role is in these conversions.

Luke provides many accurate historical and geographical details to document the story and show that translations can be accurate.

    • Does God arrange circumstances to accomplish His will?
    • Does God draw all people to the same degree?
    • What behaviors are shown by people who truly follow the Lord?

  • How Can We Tell If Someone is Truly Saved? (Acts 8:14-24) - Session 16

The apostles hear that Samaria has received the word of God so Peter and John go to see for themselves. The Samaritans show evidence of truly being in Christ. Peter is again present at this key event of the Holy Spirit going to another major people group.

We also see Simon, the former sorcerer, who seems to be drawn to showy miracles and is rebuked by Peter. Simon give us a chance to discuss a modern question: How can we tell if someone is truly saved and a follower of Christ?

This session also shows how God’s power is always greater than that of sorcery or occultism.

    • How does the Holy Spirit fall on people today?
    • How does the condition of our heart affect our walk with Christ?
    • Do some people profess faith in Jesus just to get personal gain?

  • Persecution Grows the Church (Acts 8:1-13) - Session 15

The church in Jerusalem is persecuted and scattered throughout Judea and into Samaria. This causes change in the church when the believers are forced to move to other cities and towns. The church was supposed to take the message of Jesus to Judea and Samaria, and God uses persecution to bring about His will. The church grows and expands under these circumstances, a positive thing.

We also meet Simon the sorcerer and learn of his profession of faith.

    • How should we react when we experience pain and trouble?
    • Why do we often see change as unwelcome?
    • How can we see God’s opportunities in upsetting circumstances?
    • Can we truly have joy in our troubling circumstances?

  • Uncircumcised in Heart (Acts 7:44-60) - Session 14

Stephen reminds the Jewish leaders that the temple building that they hold so dear is merely a copy of the real one in heaven, and that God does not dwell in a building nor in the temple rituals. Stephen directly accuses them of being just as disobedient as their forefathers. The Jewish leaders get so angry that they refuse to listen any longer and stone Stephen to death.

    • What does it mean to be uncircumcised in heart?
    • Are Christians today guilty of going through the motions rather than truly worshipping God?
    • Do people today resist the Holy Spirit?

  • The Jews Repeat Their History (Acts 7:1-43) - Session 13

Stephen is arrested and charged with blasphemy. At his trial, he does not defend himself but rather gives a history of the Jewish people. Stephen shows the Jewish leaders that they have forgotten their own history and are repeating the mistakes and sins of their forefathers. Stephen reminds the Jewish leaders that:

    • God chose Abraham and the 12 Tribes
    • The Jewish forefathers had large changes in how God dealt with them
    • Israel had a history of not recognizing prophets and redeemers
    • Israel had a history of disobeying God

  • The First Deacons: Which Jobs in the Church Are Most Important? (Acts 6:1-15) - Session 12

The apostles ask for help in serving so that they can spend time in prayer and telling others about the word of God. These are the first deacons, or servants, in the early church. In this session we learn why they chose these servants and why a division of work is often needed in the church.

We also learn that one of those chosen, Stephen, does sign miracles, disputes with the Jews, and is then falsely accused of blasphemy.

    • Are some jobs in the church are more important than others?
    • Should Christians argue with non-believers in public?
    • What are the purposes of miraculous signs and wonders?
    • How should we respond if we are falsely accused?

  • We Must Obey God Rather Than Men (Acts 5:17-42) - Session 11

The apostles are arrested for a second time for telling people about Jesus. The apostles are again ordered by the Sanhedrin to not preach Jesus, and they say they  must obey God rather than men.  What would you do if it were illegal to tell others about Christ?

In this session we find that there is sometimes a price to be paid for being a follower of Jesus, but the enemies of the cross cannot shut up the message of the good news in Jesus. We see the apostles arrested, an angel getting them out of prison, and the apostles arrested again. We also see the apostles beaten for following Jesus, yet they rejoice.

    • Will speaking about Jesus cost us anything?
    • Should Christians soften our message to keep ourselves out of trouble?
    • Does Gamaliel give good advice or bad?
    • Do painful circumstances mean that God has abandoned His followers?
