Reasoning Through the Bible

Jesus and His disciples celebrate the Passover meal which is a very private and tender moment, His last private time with His disciples. Jesus shows them love and gives them some last teachings.

This passage tells of a man who does a great service for Jesus. We never learn his name, but the Lord knows him and what he has done. Then all of the twelve disciples fall away and abandon Jesus. We also see Jesus revealing great truths to those who know Him.

• Are we willing to work in obscurity to do the work of the Lord?
• Would I do something for the Lord even if I am never recognized for it?
• If we face difficult circumstances, would we abandon God?
• What benefit is the new covenant?

A woman gives her most precious possession to Jesus and pours perfume all over Him, a great and tender act of love. By contrast, one of Jesus’ closest friends deviously betrays Him. These acts show humans are capable of the greatest love and the worst betrayal.

• Is it good to give costly things to the work of the Lord, or not?
• What should we give the Lord if we have love for Him?
• Who is responsible for the death of Jesus?
• How much money is honor and friendship worth?

In this session we deal with several questions:

• Have the land promises made in the Abrahamic Covenant been fulfilled in Joshua or Solomon’s day, or do they have a future fulfillment?
• What does it mean to honor your father and mother?
• What about Matthew 8:22 when Jesus says “let the dead bury their own dead,” meaning to follow Jesus rather than taking care of one’s parents?
• What if a young person becomes Christian and the parents are not Christian?
• What obligation do people have in taking care of elderly parents?

This session answers several questions that we hear from our listeners and the general public.

• Has the Bible been translated so many times that we cannot trust it?
• What does the Bible say about cremation?
• How should we respond to Christians publically leaving the faith?
•  What should a Christian do if there are no other Christians in their family?

This session gives an overview of doctrine, explaining which types of doctrine are essential to Christianity and which doctrines we can disagree about and still stay in fellowship with other believers. The Bible commands us to stay in unity with other Christians even if we disagree with them about some teachings, but the Bible also tells us to separate from some false teachers. How do we know the difference? This session provides an outline and overview of major categories of doctrines so that in future sessions we can dive into details to support specific teachings.

This session is greatly needed in modern churches so that we have a model for how to stay unified in fellowship with other Christians while still separating from people that the Bible commands us to separate from.

• Why does doctrine matter?
• What are essential doctrines?
• What can we agreeably disagree about?
• What teachings are the most difficult?
