"Play is the highest form of research." Albert Einstein
Adults forget how great play is for our brains. Tait explains what happens in the brain when we play (when we keep it non-competitive) and how play enhances her research. Did you know that endogenous opioids are released in the brain during play? Jenny shares ideas for ways adults can work play into their lives easily. They also share what the components of play are.
Tait shares a playful twist on thinking "what is my best self?" by shifting it to "what is my favorite self?".
They discuss how they both like wearing weird combinations of clothes and share their funnies: Jenny's vacation squats and Tait's experience on a boat as a non-boat person.

Tait and Jenny discuss the difference between self-actualization and self-transcendence, along with the connections they have. Tait explains what it physically feels like for her when she feels a sense of self-transcendence. How does wonder and awe factor in to it? Can you experience it immediately? Jenny explains a small part of what's happening in the brain when we experience it.
Is sitting quietly meditating? Not really. They explain what the difference in brain states. They also cover the "soft addiction" that can happen with meditation. When does it become navel gazing? They talk about Rebel Human curriculum and how it trains you in resilience, equanimity, and transcendence simultaneously so students can bring their different brain states out into the world.
Jenny shares how much practicing it took for her to do a large portion of her healing. Tait talks about "putting in the work" and how life isn't fair.

Tait and Jenny talk about how stress can uncover what we really care about and how it can help connect us to our purpose. They discuss the stress that comes from people pleasing and caring what others think, while acknowledging that people may hate us for not caring. Jenny shares two of the exercises around stress and spinning out that she had retreat participants do last week in Mexico. They are fun for you to do too! Tait shares how she personally engaged with the exercise. Tait explains why it's not true that we are meant to multitask and that the brain is designed to focus on one thing at a time.
Their funnies cover their made up character, Equanimy, a purple and pink winged horse, and how Jenny's bowls got her stopped at airport security.

Tait and Jenny discuss how we can change our relationship to stress to bring about a more adaptive physiological, affective, and cognitive response. They cite a few jaw dropping studies (re: weight loss, appetite suppression, blood pressure, cortisol) that explain just how powerful mindset is. Tait dissects the value of wearables and gives her opinion about sleep trackers, which is very much against the status quo right now. They tell a few stories from the women's retreat, from which they just returned share their funnies about being roommates in Mexico. Jenny likes clean surfaces and makes Tait do hard physical challenges she doesn't want to do.
Tait asks Jenny how many flights of stairs they climbed. Because they climbed up and down multiple times per day and because there were different spots built into the hillside property, it's difficult to pinpoint exactly how many flights that main hike was. The most Jenny climbed in one day was 106 flights.
CORRECTION: We used the word "excrete" improperly. Excrete is used when talking about the release of waste. We should have used the word "secrete." Hormones are secreted and waste is excreted. Our apologies!

Tait and Jenny discuss the science of anxiety, free floating anxiety, specific anxiety, the body's budget, our brain's predictions, why it's happening and how to alleviate it. How does resilience, equanimity, and transcendence, the Rebel Human core competencies work with anxiety? What is transcendence? Tait and Jenny answer these questions and share the hope in developing the skills that can reset our system, heal the interoceptive networks in the brain.
They share a few of the findings from their survey of teachers from Evanston Township High School where 3,600 students are learning Rebel Human practices.
Because of the mask, it sounds like Tait says “sunshine in your eyebrows” when in fact she said “sunshine in your eyeballs.” It also sounds like she refers to Lisa Feldman Barret as a “political psychologist” when she actually said “clinical psychologist.” Little did we know that our funnies would come when we listened back to the podcast and heard the interesting twists the mask added!

This week we need some deep calm. Jenny guides you through a 15 minute sound bath using crystal singing bowls and the gong. You can lay down and listen for some deep, nap-like calm. It can even ease you into a nap. Or you can listen while driving or doing other chores and allow the sounds to give you a mental and aural cleanse.

Jenny and Tait explain explore the five dials we can turn in any given moment to shift our physiology: breath, mantra, eye focus, movement, and non-sleep deep rest (NSDR). Each dial washes the brain in different chemicals depending on what shift you would like. Once we understand how to turn these dials and when, we then have autonomy over our whole system. Tait explains the autonomic nervous system, respiratory sinus arrhythmia, optic flow, stress response, and how we can reverse engineer our state.
This helps you have control, safety, and calm over the holidays.
They explain how they are teaching students the two parts of learning so they can retain what they learn in class.
And how can you sleep better at night? They explain the trick.
Jenny reads the "Message To Students" from their Rebel Human For Schools program. This is the message that helps teens understand WHY they are doing these practices in school and how they can program their brains rather than be programmed by social media and advertising. It also assures them that every culture has a history of contemplative practices and that this isn't a religion.
They end with their "funny" about Tait's vision for Jenny's sound bath prep using a formula one contraption and their plan to make an art film.
