  • Record Trade: Hard Fi & Ben Folds Five
In which our heroes talk s*** about the debut, self titled album from Ben Folds Five, Hard-Fi's "Stars of CCTV" and the best opening tracks to records. This will come as no surprise to regular listeners but Rob is an absolutely massive fan of Ben Folds, so was really excited to hear his little brothers thoughts on his favourite artist, who is regularly heralded as the greatest songwriter of his generation. (Thats what Rob regularly states as fact anyway.)We have a great chat about those amazing opening tracks from some great albums and manage to whittle them down to a "Top 10 Side A, Track 1" playlist.  Apparently openers from live albums don't count but Nutshell from Alice in Chains Unplugged deserves a really special mention!Later we talk about a band that Rob had pigeonholed into "S*** Indie Disco" but whose first album, Stars of CCTV, Sam just adores.

Artists like Kasabian and Arctic Monkeys get a good mention before we move onto another record on Sams list, Over the Counter Culture by The Ordinary Boys.At some point we talk about their first foray into playing, their band The Navahoes, allegedly being plagiarised by Jessie J and then Alex drops a wonderful tale of his musical father and a physical altercation with the actual Morrissey! Original Music this week by The Navahoes!Artwork kindly provided by Jake

  • Special Guest: Leon Bateman
In which one of our heroes looks back on his school days with an old friend while the other watches on a webcam. (which sounds kinda dirty.) We're joined in this episode by Leon Bateman, Rob's friend of nearly 30 years, to chat about the music that bonded them, sharing headphones and moving through life in different directions. Along the way, we touch on loads of artists and bands that we shared, some we didn't and a few that we'll always remember. We asked Leon to choose a few records to chat about so after some talk about Weezer and Wolfsbane we get into Pinewood Smile by The Darkness, Iron Maidens Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and the soundtrack album for A Star is Born (The Gaga one). This is a long one as Rob and Leon hadn't been in touch properly for a long time but the affection between friends is apparent. We do touch on some of the mental health issues both have faced and are dealing with and it wouldn't be a fair representation of our conversation if it was all edited out, but if that gets too heavy for you then there's always the story of how Leon become an Iron Maiden fan, without which he and Rob may never have become friends. • Our Favourite Records
There's some records and artists we both admire, enjoy and respect. The greats Dylan, Springsteen, Cash and Petty (but everybody loves Petty, am I right?)are obvious examples. Some of our tastes cross over the generational divide, Rancid, some Green Day, Therapy? Some records chosen have never been heard by the other. You see, one of us (Rob) comes from the tail end of Generation X and pretty much wishes that it was still 1995, when life was easier, his hair wasn't grey and he was skinny, cool and girls liked him. (Some of that might be lies)The other (Sam) is one of those entitled millennials you keep reading about who thinks bands were cool on Myspace and for who downloading music to a computer in your pocket has always been a thing. The albums discussed today give a snapshot of those records we hold dear, those that we feel represent (or did at some point) who we might be or just simply be a bloody great record that everyone should hear. We've committed to making a run of 10 or 12 shows over the coming weeks. If we're still having a blast after that, and a break for the summer, we will come back and do some more. But for now we just enjoying talking rubbish, coming out with cliched opinions, hot takes and sometimes just dismissing the entire works of great artists with barely a pause. The best thing about this is just listening to some great records, some old, some new and some long forgotten.A few linksMultiple Ways to follow Records & BandsOriginal Music by Alvin and the Angry Barrels.
