    About Marya Hornbacher:
In 1998, Marya Hornbacher published her first book, Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia, to international renown. Her first book, the memoir Wasted, appeared when she was 23, and was shortlisted for a Pulitzer Prize. This book earned Hornbacher a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in nonfiction, and over the years has become a worldwide classic. Her first novel, The Center of Winter, was published in 2005 to international acclaim. The New York Times named the book an Editor’s Choice, and Booklist called Hornbacher “a master storyteller.” Her third book, Madness: A Bipolar Life, was an immediate New York Times Bestseller, and earned her more praise in the Times, which wrote, “Hornbacher is a virtuoso writer.” Her fourth and fifth books, Sane: Mental Illness, Addiction, and the Twelve Steps and Waiting: A Nonbeliever’s Higher Power, both published by Hazelden, have found passionate audiences who are working toward recovery from addictions of all kinds. Waiting, published in 2011, examines the role of spirituality in a non-believer’s life, and was a finalist for both the Books for Better Life Award and the Minnesota Book Award. Marya’s sixth book, We’ve Been Healing All Along: Real Lives and Real Strategies for Mental Health Recovery, tells the personal stories of dozens of people with mental health disorders who are defining and achieving, personal success on their own terms.

Hornbacher’s work is available in more than twenty languages, which has earned her an international reputation. A three-time Morse Fellow at Yale, and a regular speaker on humanism and ethics at Harvard, she has also spoken on the topics of recovery, spirituality, and mental health at Columbia Medical School, Vassar, UC Berkeley, Swarthmore, Skidmore, Wesleyan, Amherst, the University of Michigan, and many others. Born in San Francisco, Hornbacher has long made her home in Minneapolis. The recipient of a host of awards for her books, journalism, teaching, and research, including the Annie Dillard Award for Creative Nonfiction and the Fountain House Humanitarian Award for Mental Health Activism, she is a current Logan Nonfiction Fellow at the Carey Institute for Global Good. • Seeing Recovery Through Ocean Eyes with Lisa Denning

    ABOUT LISA DENNING:
While still in recovery from a life-threatening eating disorder, Lisa Denning moved to Hawaii in 1999 to explore her connection with the dolphins and whales more deeply. On her first swim out in the ocean, she was surrounded by a pod of wild dolphins and welcomed into their pod. She felt at home in her body for the first time, ever. From that day on, Lisa swam out to be with that same pod for hours every day. It was there with the dolphins that she found her body, heart, true joy, and finally begin to heal. With the dolphins, Lisa found herself experiencing what hadn’t been safe or possible yet with humans. Her friendship with these ocean beings led her not only deeper into herself and recovery but also to create a life filled with joy that she never imagined existed.

Lisa is also an underwater photographer with dolphins and whales and an ocean guide, co-facilitating seminars in Hawaii and different locations around the world where people come to be with these beings in their ocean homes. Over the years, she has guided thousands of people into the ocean introducing them to the magic of the underwater world. Ocean Eyes Photography started as a way to share her experiences in the ocean with others. It brings Lisa joy to capture the incredible interactions that are happening between humans and our ocean family. Because of the relationships and deep connection felt with dolphins, whales, and sharks, Lisa has been able to witness and capture magical moments all over the world. For her, it’s not about ‘getting the shot’, it is about being with them and seeing the magic that unfolds.

In addition to her work with Light ON, Oceans Within, and Ocean Eyes Photography, Lisa works as a life coach focusing on working with those in recovery with eating disorders. She is currently completing “Oceans Within” her first book about her recovery journey that will share the details of Lisa’s recovery journey both in and out of the water. Through writing, speaking, imagery, and more, Lisa hopes to provide inspiration and the knowledge that real recovery is not only possible but worth every second of what it takes to get there. Lisa believes that “we all have what we need inside to heal and we find these reminders along the way as we are ready.” Lisa believes that recovery is not solely about stopping and managing symptoms but feeling free and joyful in one’s body expressing one’s authentic truth.

Lisa is also the Co-Founder of Light ON Foundation. Light ON is a 501c3 community organization founded by Lisa and trauma specialist Teri Callaghan. Their mission is to provide alternative and expanded healing opportunities to survivors of sexual abuse, domestic violence, child abuse, and other forms of interpersonal trauma. Light ON’s goal is to become a model for healing the effects of individual and community trauma that can be adapted and used effectively in any location. Inspired by her relationship to the ocean, Lisa created Oceans Within, where she offers weekend retreats, community wellness days, and other gatherings depending on the needs of the community. ABOUT TABITHA FARRAR:

Tabitha Farrar grew up in Wiltshire, England, in an idyllic (yet rainy) village. Despite being a robust and confident teenager, she developed an eating disorder at the age 17. This devastating illness took sole position in her life until, at age 25, Tabitha finally started her own recovery journey. She successfully recovered from her eating disorder and the complicated matrix of obsessions and habitual eating disorder behaviors that came with it without any professional help.

Since Recovering, Tabitha has worked as an eating disorder recovery coach and coached hundreds (possibly thousands) of people in recovery. She has written numerous eating disorder recovery guides for adults (see below), peer mentored adults with eating disorders and parents/partners of adults since 2009, has advocated for FBT for adults in eating disorder recovery, and was selected to be a Coordinated Specialty Care Grant Advisory Board member. Tabitha was also a founding member of International Eating Disorder Action and World Eating Disorders Action Day and the founder of Active Eating Disorder Recovery for Adults (AEDRA) Meal Support Service. She is the former host of the Eating Disorder Recovery Podcast.

  • Navigating Through Postpartum with Jaren Soloff, RD, IBCLC

    ABOUT JAREN SOLOFF :

Jaren Soloff is a Registered Dietitian and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who has always felt a connection to supporting women in some way professionally. For the longest time, she was stumped on how to find a profession that would allow her to integrate her interest in feminism, social justice, health, law and community. Finding the profession of lactation consulting after Jaren had her daughter was a gift that provided her the opportunity to integrate both her lived experience as a mother and as a recovered professional.

Jaren spent the early portion of her career working as a Registered Dietitian counseling individuals who struggled with eating disorders, disordered eating and chronic dieting. In her counseling, she taught about how as babies we are all born knowing how to eat intuitively. Jaren thought ‘if I could help support mothers in preserving their infants ability to eat intuitively from the beginning when breast or chestfeeding that I could ultimately have a larger impact on how our children navigate their own relationships with food and bodies.’

After having her first daughter, Jaren’s desire to become a lactation consultant hit her with full force after having her own breastfeeding challenges. Now, Jaren’s personal and professional experience have come full circle (the inspiration for the name of her practice!) in helping to support other mothers in her community. FULL CRCL provides nutrition counseling and lactation consultations to help both mom and baby thrive in motherhood. Informed by her own journey and the hundreds of women she has counseled, Jaren’s experience comes full circle to support women in navigating pregnancy, birth and postpartum from a simple and intuitive framework.

Jaren prides herself on blending her experiences as both a nutrition therapist and lactation consultant to provide mothers with expert feeding support and a dose of compassion, listening and empowerment. Jaren also published “The Postnatal Cookbook: Simple and Nutritious Recipes to Nourish Your Body and Spirit During the Fourth Trimester,” for new moms.
