Tom with a Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Doris with a Master's in Counseling Psychology are career educators. Now retired from the local school district, Doris devotes 100% of her time to eating disorder prevention through Andrea's Voice Foundation. Tom, too, focuses more attention on their non-profit’s efforts following his retirement as a Professor from a local college in Northern California.
Doris authored Andrea's Voice: Silenced by Bulimia and wrote for 7 years a popular "Advice for Parents" blog for her publishers, Gürze Books, until focusing on her own A Joyful Journey blog. She hosted the VoiceAmerica™ Radio Show, Savor Yourself...beyond skin deep, has been named a Community Hero by both her hometown of Napa, and the NorthBay ED organization, EDRS, and awarded the Soroptimist Ruby Award for Women Helping Women. Andrea Lynn Smeltzer, 19, was trained in opera, enjoyed the theater, was an avid dancer and masterful at making jewelry and crafting poetry. After studying in Spain for a year at the age of fourteen, she spoke Spanish fluently. At the time of her death she was studying German, with a plan to master Japanese next. At Pitzer College, she was awarded the prestigious Fletcher Jones Scholarship, worked as a Resident Assistant and Mentor, majored in International Business and Politics - and looked forward to saving the world. She died tragically after thirteen months of bulimic behaviors on June 16, 1999.
Since Andrea's death, Doris and Tom have created various eating disorder educational presentations and outreach efforts (locally, nationwide, and internationally), have appeared in popular media (TV, radio, film), authored numerous published articles, books. blogs, and their web site, all with the intent to educate and inform others on the need for research, prevention, early recognition, immediate intervention, and the skilled treatment of eating disorders. Doris and Tom created Andrea's Voice Foundation (AVF) dedicated to promoting education and understanding toward the prevention, identification, diagnosis, treatment of disordered eating and related issues, and transforming perspectives...one person at a time.
Doris and Tom continue their outreach efforts in the local community and beyond via presentations and workshops at school districts, colleges, universities, professional organizations, and treatment centers. When not educating on disordered eating and providing training on bully prevention and character education, gardens, and works on projects with Tom in their Northern California home, which they share with their cats and llamas. ABOUT KRISTIE AMADIO:
Kristie Amadio is Founder and CEO of Recovered Living, which offers online eating disorder recovery coaching as well as 24/7 live-in support to people both domestically and internationally.
After 14 years of battling her eating disorder and seeking treatment in both Australia and New Zealand—where she was told she was ‘chronic’ and should expect to struggle with food and body image issues for the rest of her life—Kristie flew to America for intensive treatment and made a full recovery.
Kristie was stunned by the gap and unequal access to support and resources both here and overseas, so she resolved to make cost-effective support available to everyone, no matter where they lived. By working online and living with people in recovery all around the world, Kristie Amadio is adding a new dimension to the platform used to treat eating disorders. Kristie is a Certified Eating Disorder Coach with the Carolyn Costin Institute.
One of a kind, irrepressible enthusiasm, and candid honesty is what forms the basis of Kristie’s essence. She uses the same strength she required in her own recovery to guide and inspire others, while her genuine compassion allows her to connect easily with clients.

ABOUT CAROLYN COSTIN:
In her early twenties, Carolyn Costin recovered from anorexia nervosa, earned two master’s degrees, became a teacher and began her career as a psychotherapist. A passionate and dedicated educator Carolyn taught high school and community college for 8 years and brought teaching to her role as an eating disorder therapist.
After successfully treating her first eating disorder client in 1979, Carolyn recognized this was her calling. Her continued success led her to develop and direct several inpatient eating disorder facilities during the period of 1987 to 1996.
In 1996, Carolyn created Monte Nido, the first licensed, residential eating disorder treatment facility in a home setting. She was the first to combine state of the art eating disorder treatment with eastern healing modalities, such as yoga and meditation. She was first to speak out that people with eating disorders could be fully “Recovered” and first to openly hire recovered therapists. Knowing that role models, trust and relationships matter, Carolyn created a program where staff and clients shop, cook and eat meals together like a family. Carolyn wanted clients and their families to have a healing environment where professionals delivered expert care and clients acquired the knowledge and skills necessary for long-term recovery.
Carolyn’s personal history of an eating disorder, her humanistic relational approach, her acclaimed speaking engagements, her six books and Monte Nido’s highly successful outcome study (Brewerton & Costin, 2011) have resulted in Carolyn being one of the most respected and sought-after leaders in the eating disorder field.
A large percentage of Carolyn’s career has been lecturing, training, teaching and supervising clinicians, dietitians, and physicians. Many regularly attend a monthly study group for professionals Carolyn began in the mid-1980s. An official CE provider, through the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC), Carolyn continues to travel nationally and internationally educating professionals and the public about eating disorders.
Having left Monte Nido & Affiliates in early 2016 Carolyn remains active in the eating disorder field on many fronts. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Eating Disorders and stays involved in many professional eating disorder organizations, as a member, speaker, consultant, or a collaborator on projects, such as her work with Project Heal, training eating disorder mentors for Communities of Healing.
In early 2017, Carolyn opened The Carolyn Costin Institute, which offers Eating Disorder Coach Training, Mentor Training, Continuing Education for clinicians as well as other specialized training.
