“If you are the Christ, tell us plainly,” boldy demanded the Jews of Jesus. His reply to them was just as bold: “I and the Father are one.” Jesus the Christ is one in essence and nature with God the Father. These words caused the Jews to attempt to stone him. In this week’s extraordinary passage from the Gospel of John, John 9:1–41, Jesus heals a blind man, completely restoring his sight. The man had never seen light but he who is the light of the world opened the blind man’s eyes to see not only the landscape before him but also to see the truth that Jesus was the promised Messiah. At the same time, those who thought they knew the truth, the Pharisees, were demonstrated to be truly blind because they could not recognize their own sinfulness nor could they see that Jesus was the one who could heal them. As Jesus was challenged by those he encountered, he accurately identified the main issue of their hearts — their sin ruled over them, turning them into slaves. He also knew the only solution that would break those chains and give them true freedom: Jesus himself! He called them to feast on him and to be obedient to his teachings. Knowing Jesus the Savior was the key to being set free from their bondage. This week, Redeemer friend, former elder, and church-planting pastor Binoi Samuel preaches “The King’s Authority and Commission” from Matthew 28:16–20. The Old Testament prophets had warned that the people had forsaken God, the fountain of living waters, and had instead looked to other things — broken “cisterns” that can hold no water — to meet their needs. In this Friday’s passage, John 7:25–52, we see that Jesus is the one whom God the Father sent. Jesus calls those who thirst to come to him to drink the waters that truly satisfy. As we continue our series in John we see the people in Judea arguing about who Jesus is — whether he is “a good man” or “leading the people astray.” Jesus declares himself to be the one who seeks the glory of God the Father and in whom there is no falsehood. Jesus tells his followers to not work for the things of this world that will perish, but rather to trust and believe in him because only he will satisfy their deepest needs and longings. His words were hard to hear — while they wanted physical bread, he declared that he himself was the true bread and that if they feasted on him, they would have eternal life. These miracles demonstrate his care not only for people’s souls but also that he is compassionate and he cares about our physical needs as well.
