We learned in John 1 that Jesus is the prophesied Messiah. In this week's passage, we see Jesus perform the first miracle of his public ministry — a miracle that was designed to bring him glory and to point toward the significance of why he had come. “Follow me.” It is with these simple words that Jesus calls men and women to himself. In John 1:35–51 we meet a few such disciples — men whom Jesus called and who came and followed him, recognizing that he was the foretold Messiah they were waiting for. “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” This is the question the scribes and onlookers asked as they watched Jesus tell a paralytic man his sins were forgiven. Last week we began our new series in the book of John by meeting the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us, Jesus Christ. This week, we come to John the Baptist’s testimony of who Jesus Christ is: The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The New Testament can be hard to understand! At least that’s what the Apostle Peter said about the writings of the Apostle Paul in 2 Peter 3:16. So what should Christians do? Last week we started our series “Growing in Grace” by seeing our need to “embrace the Old Testament like a lamp in a dark place.” This week, Redeemer elder Eric Zeller continues the series by preaching 2 Peter 3:14–18, “Exegete the New Testament.”

The New Testament can be difficult, but God has not left us without resources or instructions about what to do with it. This text will show us how every Christian is called to overcome the difficulties of the New Testament as we keep growing in grace.

Not long after God said, “Let there be light,” human sin plunged the world back into darkness. Indeed, sin has made suffering universal. The creation groans. Death dominates. Nevertheless, shafts of God’s unassailable light pierce through this darkness.

In Friday’s preaching text, we learn that one of these shafts of light is the Old Testament. We must cling to the Old Testament like a lamp shining in a dark place until Christ returns for us. “But you have come to Mount Zion … and to Jesus … and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word…” This week as our study of Hebrews comes to a close we are reminded to come to Jesus to worship him and that from this worship of our king will overflow a life that is pleasing to God. Everything hangs on whether Jesus rose physically from the grave. If Christ did not triumph over death, then he is still dead, and we are still guilty of our sins, separated from God with no hope of salvation. And yet, Jesus did indeed rise — he is alive, seated at the right hand of God the Father!

The Christian life is not for the faint of heart: we experience suffering, we continue to struggle daily against sin, and we submit ourselves to the discipline of our heavenly Father. Yet through it all, we are told to press on and to strive toward holiness.
