John the Baptist had declared that Jesus was the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The Jewish Scriptures prophesied Jesus’ coming. The Spirit had descended upon Jesus at his baptism and God the Father had declared, “This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus’ own miracles testified that he was the Messiah, but still the religious leaders refused to recognize him. The Jews were seeking to kill Jesus because he equated himself with God. Furthermore, he claimed that he could give life, declaring, “The hour is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.” He also claimed that he had the authority to judge and to bring judgment. In this week’s sermon, we will look at Jesus’s claims about himself from John 5:18–29 and see that Christ’s death and resurrection proved that his claims were true — and that they demand a response from us. “Do you want to be healed?” Jesus asked the paralytic man he met in Jerusalem. In this week’s sermon text, John 4:46—5:17, we meet two men — one, a lifelong invalid, and the other, a man whose son lies dying. Jesus heals both the paralytic and the son, but he also does so much more: these men, seeing the work of God, believe, and in doing so, their very souls are healed and their lives are transformed by their encounters with Jesus. Jesus’ disciples were shocked that Jesus would talk to a lowly Samaritan woman. But as she leaves in haste to tell the other townspeople to come and meet the long-expected Messiah, it becomes apparent that Jesus had come not only to save Jews but to save all the nations. Meeting the Samaritan woman at the well, Jesus was immediately able to see that a series of broken relationships had not fulfilled her and she was thirsting for something more. Recognizing her need, Jesus tells her that she will never quench her thirst on her own, “but whoever drinks of the water that I will give will never be thirsty again” (John 4:14). In John 3:22–36 we read that John’s disciples were concerned that as crowds began to form around Jesus that Jesus was becoming more popular than John. Rather than becoming discouraged or jealous, John rejoices that Israel’s bridegroom had arrived at last, declaring that Jesus is “above all” and that he gives eternal life to those who believe in him. Our passage begins with the well known and beloved words of John 3:16. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” Tune in as Pastor Morgan Renew preaches “The God Who Saves” from John 3:16–21 and hear the gospel proclaimed afresh. God was not content to leave us in darkness; he sent his Son as a light into the world in order to save the world through him!

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” In John 3:1–15, Jesus’ teaching about the new birth confronts Nicodemus with his hopeless spiritual condition apart from God’s regenerating grace. All of Nicodemus’ religious zeal and law-keeping cannot replace his need to be supernaturally born again. In John 2:13–25, after Jesus clears the temple, he issues a bold claim: “Destroy this temple and in three day I will raise it up.” For centuries, the Jerusalem temple had stood as the physical meeting place between God and man, a place where atonement was made for sin, and where God communed with his people — a place of worship. Here Jesus declares that he is the true and better temple that cannot be destroyed. Through his life, death, and resurrection, God’s presence has come into our world in a new way. Where does your heart go when life makes no sense at all; when injustice and suffering in the world overwhelm you; when it feels like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling?
