Making redundancies costs money before it saves any. So how do you know whether the numbers stack up, and what might be missing from the budget?
In this episode I talk to commercial coach Jo Bailey to unpack the financial side of managing redundancies, from overlooked costs and cash flow to how long it takes for savings to cover the initial expense.
We explore management time, dips in productivity and costs that continue after employees leave, alongside why HR and finance need to plan together.
It's a practical conversation for HR professionals managing redundancies who want to understand the numbers, ask better questions and contribute to redundancy and restructuring decisions.

I'm joined by workplace mediator Lizanne Keenan to explore how mediation skills can help HR professionals and line managers approach difficult redundancy conversations.
We talk about active listening, making space for emotion, knowing when to pause and choosing a meeting room that gives people privacy. We also explore how avoiding conversations after redundancy can leave assumptions and resentment to grow into workplace conflict.
This is a practical conversation for anyone managing redundancies who wants to help people feel heard, support the remaining team and protect working relationships.

Managing redundancy brings plenty for HR teams to think about. Alongside a fair and legally compliant process, there are opportunities to make a real difference to how people experience it.
In this episode I share four ways to build a more person-centred redundancy process:
• Preparing line managers to listen, respond to emotions and handle difficult questions.
• Planning employee support and communication outside formal consultation meetings.
• Giving people choice and recognising individual needs.
• Thinking beyond the leaving date, from thoughtful goodbyes to ongoing outplacement support.
If you’re an HR professional or leader planning redundancies, you’ll find practical ideas to help people feel informed, supported and valued. Many cost nothing, but they do need a place in your planning.

Managing a redundancy process can take a significant emotional toll on HR professionals. You may be balancing legal process, pressure from senior leaders and difficult conversations with people you know well, while trying not to take the emotion home with you.
In this episode of Redundancy Matters, I’m joined by Claire Cathcart, founder of the Elevate Hub, to talk about what HR professionals need to protect their own wellbeing during a redundancy process.
We discuss how to avoid taking difficult reactions personally, the importance of boundaries and signposting, building a supportive professional network, and why an HR wellbeing plan should sit alongside the project plan from the very beginning.

When someone is at risk of redundancy one of the first questions they often ask is "Can you help me with my CV?"
For HR professionals and managers it can be difficult to know where to start, especially as CV writing isn't likely to be one of your core skills. And yet if organisations don't provide access to outplacement support this is what you'll end up doing.
So I invited Phil Sterne, an Executive Career Coach and experienced CV writer to join me as we share practical advice on how you can help people start working on their CV. We talk about CVs should be written for the job someone wants, not the job they're leaving, how to help people recognise the value they bring, common mistakes that hold candidates back, and the role AI can play in the process.

In this episode I’m joined by HR copywriter Katie Murray to explore the role communication plays in redundancy processes and why the way people experience those conversations matters just as much as the process itself.
Drawing on more than 20 years in HR, Katie shares honest reflections from supporting redundancy programmes, including the moments where communication built trust and the moments where it broke down. We talk about preparing line managers for difficult conversations, avoiding the “tick-box” approach, and why silence and unclear messaging can make an already difficult situation harder for employees.
We also discuss how organisations can communicate with empathy while still managing a legally compliant process, the importance of flexibility during consultation, and how outplacement support can help people feel informed and supported about what comes next.
