Courtyard Estates will celebrate 20 years in Kewanee in August. Heather Swanson from Courtyard Estates joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about the big celebration for both the community and the families of the residents of Courtyard Estates, all of whom can take part in the 20th Anniversary festivities on August 28th from 2 Pm until 5 Pm. Part of the fun includes Horse Drawn Carriage Rides. Courtyard Estates in Kewanee also recently celebrated upgrades and construction to update their facilities as Heather Swanson told WKEI in this interview. All of it was with the goal of making sure residents get the best care possible at Courtyard Estates in Kewanee.

Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore was our guest on Wake Up Tri-Counties on Tuesday to talk about Monday night's Kewanee City Council Meeting. On the agenda was the continuing discussion of McClure Street. A recently conducted test in the area indicated that the street does not meet the standard of a dangerous street by state standards. Thus, if the City of Kewanee wanted to add a stop sign or make other safety improvements to the street it would come at a steep cost to the City of Kewanee. Elsewhere on the agenda, the Council decided to table a vote regarding Cottage Street. The question is whether to make the street into an alley.

Lynette Harben, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nodaway County came in to talk about their up coming 5K Run Walk Saturday September 10th. Lynette also talked about the constant need for Bigs who have the desire to help area kids and more specifically those in the smaller towns surrounding Maryville.

OSF Saint Luke Medical Center Community Health Education Director Connie Wessells was our guest on Wake Up Tri-Counties on Monday, July 25th. Following a weekend that saw triple digit temps on Saturday, Connie joined WKEI with some summer safety tips. Be aware of your Sun exposure. Too much time in the hot sun can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Avoid being outside, if you can, for a lenghty period of time when the sun is at its peak, 10 Am to 2 Pm. Drink plenty of water and watch out for the signs of sun related distress. Be sure to wear sunscreen, 30 SPF or higher. We also discussed safe grilling and water safety, specifically related to your backyard swimming pools.

IRS Agent Michael Devine joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Monday morning to talk taxes. Those who filed a 6 month extension back in April are reminded that there is no need to wait until the last minute to get filed. If you've gathered your tax information and are ready to file you don't have to wait until the second deadline arrives in October. Get your taxes filed immediately to avoid any possibility of missing that second deadline and incurring any fees. Meanwhile, if you are someone who filed on time and has even received a refund or a tax bill, now is a good time to start thinking of next years. Visit IRS.gov and check out the withholding calculator. It's the best way to determine if you are having enough withheld from your paycheck to get a refund next year. The Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District is holding their next Volunteer Day on August 5th, at the McCune Sand Prairie. Volunteers will need to bring gloves to help with the removal of the invasive species called Mullein. Mullein can overgrow and spread rapidly causing issues for less pervasive plants as well as for the beauty of the Sand Prairie in general. Volunteers are needed from 9 Am until 1 Pm on Friday, August 5th. Contact the Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District to let them know that you would like to become a volunteer.
