Kewanee Schools are wrapping up their summer school classes this week and it has been a remarkably successful year. More students than ever before attended summer school classes this year and Rebecca Baney, Principal at Belle Alexander Elementary School talked to WKEI about how Summer School benefitted so many students this year and how COVID-19 and remote learning created a new level of eagerness to receive in-person school via Summer School.

The summer season is only warming up and that means long days at the Kewanee Parks Department. Experts are predicting an increase in tick bites this summer. An increase in the deer population is said to be leading to the increase and spread of the tick population. With ticks comes the potential for tick bites and Lyme Disease. Dr Robert Ayers joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on Monday morning to talk about ticks, how to avoid tick bites and the dangerous potential of Lyme Disease.

The John Deere Classic returns for its 50th year on the week of July 7th through July 11th. Sports writer Craig Devrieze covered the event for years as a sports writer for the Quad City Times. Now, no longer a sportswriter, Craig has become an author and historian who has collected the history of the John Deere Classic in a new book called "Magic Happened Celebrating 50 Years of the John Deere Classic." The book is available through the John Deere Classic website and we got Craig to tell a few stories on the Monday edition of Wake Up Tri-Counties on WKEI.

The Henry County Board met on Thursday evening in Cambridge. A relatively short agenda included the official appointment of the new Henry County Treasurer, Rex Kiser, who will take over the remaining term of Henry County Treasurer Tim Wells who announced his resignation late in 2020. Kiser will take over the office on July 6th and will remain in office through November of 2022 at which time he would need to be re-elected to continue in the position. Henry County has several job openings, Erin Knackstedt, Henry County Administrator told Wake Up Tri-Counties about how people can apply to work for Henry County in our interview on Friday morning.

The Nolan Keane Baseball Classic is back in 2021 with the first pitches being thrown this evening, Friday, June 18th, 2021. The tourney with multiple Kewanee based teams and more than 100 kids coming to play throughout the weekend will run June 18th through the evening of June 20th. 5 separate age brackets will have teams competing around the clock during the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday including at venues such as Northeast Park and Windmont Park in Kewanee but also parks in Annawan and Neponset. Kewanee Police Chief Nick Welgat is one of the organizers of the annual tournament and we talked to Chief Welgat regarding Nolan Keane on Wake Up Tri-Counties.
