The holidays are looking a bit different for many this year, with traveling and large family celebrations on the back burner.  Cooking at home continues to be an increased part of everyday life, and is a part of our holiday celebrations as we pivot once again to maintain the comfort of what holidays always bring to our families.  In an effort to make our holidays happier, Monica Nyman, senior nutrition educator and registered dietitian with the St. Louis District Dairy Council, visited WZOE’s Wake Up Princeton program recently.

She shared some ideas on ways to stay healthy through the holidays.  Her top tips are to start your day with breakfast and don’t skip meals.  Also be sure to choose high protein foods to keep you satisfied throughout the day.  She says it's important to choose a variety foods throughout the day and it's also a good idea to start meal planning and maintain or start a physical activity routine.

Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore was our guest on Tuned In on Tuesday, December 29th, 2020. On the agenda, a look back at Monday night's Kewanee City Council Meeting including discussion regarding the City of Kewanee contract with Cottingley and Butler of Dubuque, Iowa to provide consulting work related to insurance. The City of Kewanee also tabled a new insurance agreement that would provide an option for former City of Kewanee Department heads to return to the City of Kewanee Insurance plan one time, should they give up their City of Kewanee insurance for a new plan. The goal is to encourage those who retire as City of Kewanee Department heads to find other means of insurance. The Kewanee City Council also made waves by voting 5 to 0 in favor of no longer having the County collect local hotel taxes. The City of Kewanee will no handle billing and collection of hotel taxes with the goal taking more control over how tourism is promoted related to Kewanee.

RaeAnn Tucker from the Henry and Stark County Health Department joined WKEI on People to People to discuss the latest COVID-19 headlines in the two Counties. The main topic of the day however, is the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. The Moderna vaccine was delivered to the Henry County Office of Emergency Management who then instructed the Health Department to begin vaccinating local EMS workers in Henry and Stark County. A separate order of the vaccine was delivered to each of the two local hospitals, Hammond Henry Hospital and OSF Saint Luke Medical Center. Each hospital is already in the process of vaccinating frontline workers.

Dee Snider, singer-songwriter, musician, radio personality and actor visited with WZOE’s Paul Bomleny recently. Snider, who came to prominence in the 1980s as lead singer of the heavy metal band Twister Sister, has a new holiday song out. He’s joined by Lzzy Hale of the band Halestorm on “The Magic of Christmas Day”.

In the late 80s, the classically-trained musician wrote the song as a gift to his wife of nearly 40 years, Suzette. In the 90s, Celine Dion recorded the song and put it on what would become the biggest selling holiday album in history. Dee says between the coronavirus and politics, we all need a little inspiration so he decided to record the song for the first time this year.

Dee wrote every Twisted Sister song, including the hits “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “I Wanna Rock”. He says his personal favorite is one of their early songs “You Can’t Stop Rock ‘n’ Roll” because it best captures the nature of the band.

Snider also is directing a movie and working on a new album due out in 2021 and says you can look for him on the new season of the streaming TV series “Cobra Kai”.

The team behind Bakersville have teamed up with WKEI 1450 Am and 100.1 FM to bring you a holiday radio play, Miracle on Chestnut Street. Written by Jacque Komnick and featuring the many Bakersville players, this play set in Kewanee tells a wonderful tale of Christmas in Kewanee featuring references to City's past culled from the memories of the many who responded when Jacque Komnick reached out for memories of Kewanee's past.

We've reached the season finale of ABC's The Great Christmas Light Fight and host and judge Taniya Nayack cannot wait for you to see what they have in store for you this year. Film a year ago, the finale is the culmination of the 2019 contest as, due to filming constraints, the show always tapes one year in advance and has done so for 8 years. Thus, when you watch the finale on Wednesday, December 23rd on ABC you will see plenty of hugging and no masks or social distancing. We talked with Taniya Nayack for this preview of The Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC.

Dr Chris Sullens joined WKEI for our Tuned In program on WKEI on Tuesday. Dr. Sullens talked about what took place at Monday night's Kewanee School Board Meeting including stating their will be an 'adaptive pause' after the Christmas Break. Kids will return from the break on January 4th but they will all do so on remote learning for the week before returning to the hybrid schedule the following week. This is at the recommendation of the Health Department as a Holiday spike in COVID-19 cases is likely. The extra time gives students more of a window to be symptom free for returning to the hybrid schedule. High School sports were also discussed on Monday night and with still no word on whether High School Sports will officially be able to return next month or not.

First, of course, people are discouraged from gathering large groups, from multiple households, in one place. That said, some people are going to go ahead and do that and the Health Department has ways you can, at the very least, limit your potential exposures for you and the people you care about.
