She’s not a music nerd… but somehow music’s been lurking in the background of Maddie’s life the whole time. From dance class anthems to her dad's unexpected obsession with Mongolian throat singing, we take a winding trip through the soundtrack of her upbringing. Spice Girls, N*Sync, Lorena McKennitt, Don Spencer, Cat Stevens, S Club 7, Jerry Lee Lewis — it’s all in there (with no logical order whatsoever).
A funny, nostalgic, slightly chaotic stroll through Maddie's accidental musical history.
We also drop a brand new segment and another fantastic edition of In The Weeds with Maddie.
This week we have Sydney comedian and old friend, Andrew Hastings! Andrew educates us on the Emo movement of the early 2000s and it's tie in to some of his favourite bands, as well as his blended family tales. He also shares his heartbreaking first crush and his triumphant first kiss which he ended up getting tattooed on him (well not really, but you'll see)! Rate us 5 stars and thanks for listening!
This week on the pod we're joined by very special guest, Danny's older brother - Matt Giles! Danny asks his brother things about his experiences in childhood that he wasn't there for. We're talking first crushes, friends, neglectful teachers, living in the USA and much more! We also check in again with Maddie's work with everyone's favourite segment - In The Weeds!
"Is your fridge running? Then you better go catch it!". This week we're revisiting the lost art form of the prank call, and to get us into the spirit, we make an actual prank call! And we mean a real one, we call a company, not some person we know, it was a lot of laughs! We also then call back after and apologise. We also have the return of fan favourite "In The Weeds with Maddie", plus we read out some of your contributions on the show! Rate us 5 stars if you enjoy us, apparently it helps!
Before DMs and disappearing voice notes, there was the home phone — a portal to awkward crushes, stammering introductions, and having to ask someone’s mum if your Year 6 boyfriend was home.
This week, we’re dialing back to:
The horror of calling your primary school sweetheart’s house and getting Dad instead,
Maddie’s brief and legendary relationship with Nick — her mysterious Year 6 boyfriend we’re meeting for the first time,
And Danny’s early misadventures on a dating phone line... involving a fake profile, his sister, and a very kinky adult caller he still hasn’t forgotten.
It’s all here: cringe, chaos, and a heavy dose of 2000s landline-era romance.
It's one of the biggest moments of your childhood, saying goodbye to your parents at the gate and stepping into the unknown. Danny confirms that he was definitely one of the kids who cried on the first day, plus a bunch of core memories locked in from kindergarten. We also dive into the first day of high school! Maddie shares her memories of being part of the Steiner school camp and her favourite moments. We also try out a new segment - Facebook Marketplace Stories! We're back after an extended hiatus! We talk about where we've been for the last month and Maddie's recent birthday celebration!
Following up from our last episode, we now dive into Maddie's report cards and journals that the students at her school were forced to write.
Delve into young 11 year old Maddie's mind as she has a love/hate relationship with her journal, continually gets more and more self referential and we meet a new character that has not yet been brought up!
Danny's year 9 and 10 report cards were sitting in storage, so we dug them out and went through them. Come and listen to Danny's high school teachers absolutely go to town on him about just how painful he was as a student.
We also cover the joy that is parent teacher nights.
