#74: How To Start An Online Business (Part 2)

Online businesses can be some of the most profitable enterprises around. With low overheads and staff requirements, the potential to make money is huge. As the world population spends more of their hard-earned income online, the opportunity for entrepreneurs to build wealth from starting an online business is abundant.

But many online start-ups fail, so how you can you differentiate yourself and make a success? As an entrepreneur, you know the number one rule of business is to go where the customer is. And that means you must build an effective online presence.

With the boom of the Internet and social media has arisen a new category of entrepreneurship. An online business offers an unparalleled opportunity to run a business worldwide with only a laptop and an Internet connection. Starting and growing an online business, however, is easier said than done.

You can't escape it… no matter what business you're in these days, you need to have an online presence to be successful. In every industry and in every niche, no matter what product you sell or service you provide… whether your business is bricks-and-mortar or completely on the Internet… prospects and customers need to be able to find you online. They're already looking for you… so make sure you're not "hiding."

As an entrepreneur, you know the number one rule of business is to go where the customer is. And that means you must build an effective online presence.

The great news is that you don't have to be a web marketing expert or programmer—or hire someone who is extremely expensive—to get noticed on the Internet and bring more people to your offline store or e-commerce storefront.

There is a dangerous belief that the only way you can be successful is by committing your life to a nine to five career. It makes sense why you would believe that; you are told this by your parents, your teachers, your bosses. This is an outdated belief, and if you continue to live by it, you could wake up thirty years from now regretting how you spent your working days.

If you're still committed to that belief but dread going to work every day, then I wrote this for you. The world is starved for a new way: a new kind of leader, a new kind of business, and ultimately, a new kind of life.

David Ogilvy, CBE, (1911–1999) is often described as the "father of advertising." He founded New York agency Ogilvy & Mather in 1948, and his iconic campaigns include legendary adverts for Dove, Hathaway, Rolls Royce, and Guinness. Ogilvy's best-selling book Confessions of an Advertising Man is still one of the most popular books on advertising.

The Unpublished David Ogilvy collects a career's worth of public and private communications—memos, letters, speeches, notes, and interviews—from the "Father of Advertising" and founder of Ogilvy & Mather.

Still fizzing with energy and freshness more than twenty-five years after it was first published, its success outside the private circle of friends and colleagues it was created for was, in the words of one of its editors, "because so often he spoke out on important matters long before the crowd caught up to him; because all of what he says, he says so well; because so little of what he says in the book had ever before appeared in print."

This is a business book unlike any other: a straightforward and incisive look at subjects such as salesmanship, management, and creativity, presented in Ogilvy's trademark crisp prose. Whether carefully prepared for a lecture or as a private joke to a friend, his writing always underlines the importance of the rule "it pays an agency to be imaginative and unorthodox."

How To Start An Online Business (Part 1)

The playing field that you, the aspiring online marketer, stands upon is not level. It is stacked against you.

Resistance (self-sabotage, procrastination, fear, arrogance, self-doubt) is inside you. No one inflicts it on you from outside. You bring it with you from birth.

If you don't believe me, look around at friends and family who have talent and ambition in spades... but are drinking, doping, abusing themselves and their loved ones, wasting their lives because they can't get out of their own way and do the work they were put on this planet to do.

Trust me: you will NEVER, NEVER achieve your dreams until you learn to recognise, confront, and overcome that voice in your head that is your own Resistance.

    Now the good news...

You're not "wrong" if your head is your own worst enemy. You're not "weak." You're not "sick." Everybody experiences Resistance. Resistance is an objective force of nature, as immutable as gravity.

There's no magic bullet. No hack, no trick, no tip, no class, no degree. But you, armed with the right knowledge and resolution, can acquire the self-motivation, self-discipline, and self-belief necessary to become a focused, mentally-tough working pro.

  • #72: The World's Biggest Tech Flops And Flat Out Bombs!

This week we fondly recall some over promoted products and technologies that utterly failed to live up to their hype...

One Of Bill Gates' Favourite Case Studies

In 1957, Ford released a car that flopped so spectacularly that it has become a timeless case study on how not to develop and launch a product.

The Ford Edsel was supposed to be the new premiere car for middle-class Americans.

Ford was so confident in the product that it pumped $US250 million into it. But instead of starting a revolution, the company lost $US350 million on the unattractive gas-guzzler.

The very name "Edsel" became a popular symbol for a commercial failure.

Ford spent millions on focus groups and surveys to come up with a car was ahead of its time, a virtual prototype of the befinned monsters that became popular in a decade later. Only one problem: the Edsel was incredibly ugly, with a front grill that looked as if the car had just sucked on a lemon.

Here are some lessons from the failed launch that are still relevant today. Listen now!

    Resources mentioned in this episode:

    Seth Godin: This Is Marketing

Over the past quarter century, Seth Godin has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, and fans from all walks of life, via his blog, online courses, lectures, and bestselling books.

He is the inventor of countless ideas and phrases that have made their way into mainstream business language, from Permission Marketing to Purple Cow to Tribes to The Dip.

Now, for the first time, Godin offers the core of his marketing wisdom in one accessible, timeless package. At the heart of his approach is a big idea: Great marketers don't use consumers to solve their company's problem; they use marketing to solve other people's problems.

They don't just make noise; they make the world better. Truly powerful marketing is grounded in empathy, generosity, and emotional labour.

This book teaches you how to identify your smallest viable audience; draw on the right signals and signs to position your offering; build trust and permission with your target market; speak to the narratives your audience tells themselves about status, affiliation, and dominance; spot opportunities to create and release tension; and give people the tools to achieve their goals.

It's time for marketers to stop lying, spamming, and feeling guilty about their work. It's time to stop confusing social media metrics with true connections.

It's time to stop wasting money on stolen attention that won't pay off in the long run. This is Marketing offers a better approach that will still apply for decades to come, no matter how the tactics of marketing continue to evolve.

  • #71: How The Power Of Technology Is Shaping Our World

We are living in one of the most tumultuous times in history. The internet has revolutionised life as we know it.

There are 2.5 billion people logging onto the Internet around the world each day.

At least 290 million Internet users in the United States alone. And they're researching products and services when they're surfing the web—and buying them too.

Over the next decade, another three billion people are expected to gain access to an Internet connection, and begin contributing to our online economy.

Online businesses can be some of the most profitable enterprises around. With low overheads and staff requirements, the potential to make money is huge.

As the world population spends more of their hard-earned income online, the opportunity for entrepreneurs to build wealth from starting an online business is abundant.

It happens all the time – for one reason or another, a company gives up on a beloved product and gives it the "End of Life" kiss of death.

The company stops producing it. It stops supporting it. It diverts its resources to other pursuits in hopes of creating something bigger and better than before.

And then, that gadget we once loved is gone. Here are some of the ones that made it… and a few that didn't do so well…

Let's take a look at how technology has shaped our world.

What I'm reading this week: The Power Of Habit by Charles Duhigg

The perfect gift for anyone trying to start the new year off right, this instant classic explores how we can change our lives by changing our habits.

Named one of the best books of the year by The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times

In The Power of Habit, award-winning business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed.

Distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives that take us from the boardrooms of Procter & Gamble to the sidelines of the NFL to the front lines of the civil rights movement, Duhigg presents a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential.

At its core, The Power of Habit contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. As Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.

"Sharp, provocative, and useful."—Jim Collins "Few [books] become essential manuals for business and living. The Power of Habit is an exception. Charles Duhigg not only explains how habits are formed but how to kick bad ones and hang on to the good."—Financial Times "A flat-out great read."—David Allen, bestselling author of Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity "You'll never look at yourself, your organization, or your world quite the same way."—Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind "Entertaining . . . enjoyable . . . fascinating . . . a serious look at the science of habit formation and change."—The New York Times Book Review

  • #69: Why Facebook Rejects Your Ads (And How To Avoid It)

It's really important that we talk about compliance with Facebook. If you plan on making it with Facebook ads, if you plan on success, Facebook takes compliance incredibly seriously. They ban accounts faster than almost all other platforms. If you get banned, does it mean that you can never advertise on Facebook?

No, you could start a new ad account, but I've come to learn that it's a lot easier to just play by their rules and the rules are very fair. At the end of the day what they're doing is helping you, helping the advertisers, and helping the platform.

Though one problem is that there's a lot of things that are a little bit of a grey area, so there's going to be things that you'll see other people doing that when you try to do it, it doesn't work and Facebook may not like it. They may decline your ads.

This is how compliance impacts upon you... First of all, it impacts upon your opportunity to advertise on Facebook to begin with, but what a lot of people don't realise, is that even if an ad is running, if they find it compliant enough to run, that doesn't mean that it's doing you any good.

When Facebook's automated systems analyse your ad, they're looking for certain things that if you've done or not done, it actually impacts upon what we call your CPM or your cost per thousand impressions.

Now, if the ad is not looking good, those costs will invariably go up and when those costs go up, your cost per click goes up, your conversion costs go up, everything goes up and it starts to make your campaign look bad, but the entire time you may not have ever known that it was a poor ad, because there was no negative feedback or the compliance actually let it through...

    They Shall Not Grow Old

On the centenary of the end of First World War, Academy Award-winner Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) presents the World Premiere of an extraordinary new work showing the Great War as you have never seen it.

This unique film brings into high definition the human face of the First World War as part of a special London Film Festival presentation alongside a live Q&A with director Peter Jackson hosted by Mark Kermode.

Using state of the art technology to restore original archival footage which is more than a 100-years old, Jackson brings to life the people who can best tell this story: the men who were there.

Driven by a personal interest in the First World War, Jackson set out to bring to life the day-to-day experience of its soldiers. After months immersed in the BBC and Imperial War Museums' archives, narratives and strategies on how to tell this story began to emerge for Jackson.

Using the voices of the men involved, the film explores the reality of war on the front line; their attitudes to the conflict; how they ate; slept and formed friendships, as well what their lives were like away from the trenches during their periods of downtime.

Jackson and his team have used cutting edge techniques to make the images of a hundred years ago appear as if they were shot yesterday. The transformation from black and white footage to colourised footage can be seen throughout the film revealing never before seen details.

Reaching into the mists of time, Jackson aims to give these men voices, investigate the hopes and fears of the veterans, the humility and humanity that represented a generation changed forever by a global war.

  • #67: How to Break Out of Your Comfort Zone

Many of us think of the "comfort zone" as a relic of '80s motivational psychology.

Though in fact, the comfort zone is a pretty useful psychological concept that can help you embrace risk and make changes in your life that can lead to real personal growth.

So what is the "Comfort Zone?"

A comfort zone is a psychological state in which things feel familiar to a person and they are at ease and in control of their environment, experiencing low levels of anxiety and stress. ... It has been as "a behavioural state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position."

The idea of optimal anxiety isn't anything new. Anyone who's ever pushed themselves to get to the next level or accomplish something knows that when you really challenge yourself, you can turn up amazing results.

However, pushing too hard can actually cause a negative result, and reinforce the idea that challenging yourself is a bad idea. It's our natural tendency to return to an anxiety neutral, comfortable state. You can understand why it's so hard to kick your brain out of your comfort zone.

Even so, your comfort zone is neither a good or bad thing. It's a natural state that most people trend towards. Leaving it means increased risk and anxiety, which can have positive and negative results (which we'll get to in a moment), but don't demonise your comfort zone as something holding you back. We all need that head-space where we're least anxious and stressed so we can process the benefits we get when we leave it.

We've come to see stress as a dirty word - and for good reason, but a little bit of healthy stress can actually act as a catalyst for growth and provide a powerful motivation to act.

Within our comfort zones, generally speaking, there's little stress. Psychologically, our comfort zone is the place we're most at home.

While staying in your comfort zone can result in consistent, steady performance, stepping out of your comfort zone into a new and challenging task can create the conditions for optimal performance.

Think about it: Did you ever do something you were really proud of when you were in autopilot mode?

As always, thank you so much for tuning in. I really hope this helped. Hey, have I missed anything here though?

For more than two decades, legendary trainer Tim Grover has taken the greats—Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, and hundreds of relentless competitors in sports, business, and every walk of life—and made them greater. Now, for the first time ever, he reveals what it takes to achieve total mental and physical dominance, showing you how to be relentless and achieve whatever you desire.

Direct, blunt, and brutally honest, Grover breaks down what it takes to be unstoppable: you keep going when everyone else is giving up, you thrive under pressure, you never let your emotions make you weak.

In "The Relentless 13," he details the essential traits shared by the most intense competitors and achievers in sports, business, and all walks of life. Relentless shows you how to trust your instincts and get in the Zone; how to control and adapt to any situation; how to find your opponent's weakness and attack.

Grover gives you the same advice he gives his world-class clients—"don't think"—and shows you that anything is possible. Packed with previously untold stories and unparalleled insight into the psyches of the most successful and accomplished athletes of our time, Relentless shows you how even the best get better... and how you can too.

  • #65: 11 Killer Tips To Stay Focused And Motivated Working From Home

11 Hacks For Staying Focused And Motivated Working From Home

Thinking about making a shift and working from home? Have amazing dreams of how wonderful it will be to wear your pajamas on conference calls, laze in bed until 9am and slowly get into your day and be able to have coffee breaks whenever you want? Yeah okay, it sounds pretty cool. And it can be. But there are some things you need to know about working from home before you make the leap.

I don't share this to scare you or to try and discourage you from working from home, I truly believe it is a wonderful thing to do. I love the flexibility, I love being autonomous and I love that I get to be my own boss. I derive particular enjoyment on those cold Monday mornings when it's raining heavily and you just know the traffic tailbacks would be nothing short of atrocious, and that I don't have to deal with it. I've already worked productive hours and many people are still waiting for the car in front to move forward.

Though it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Here are a few things you should consider…

Firstly, it can be quite solitary…

My friend Steve has kindly suggested I maybe do a day or two a week in his rather funky and plush offices here in Sydney, and we get on really well. I think he's genuinely worried about me. I think he's worried about my daily lack of human contact. Though, the thought of all that morning traffic... Losing that first hour being in the car, and then again on the way home is a major turn off for me at this stage in my life.

Sure, I love a bit of banter just like the rest of us, though I am also easily distracted by conversations within earshot when I'm working, and find it hard to concentrate generally with all the distractions you find within an office environment.

So, yes working from home can be a little solitary, though I think I manage that quite well. I'm a bit of an ambivert. Half introvert, half extrovert.

The most conversation I have in a day will probably take place either via email, Skype and it's most likely about work. I really enjoy the luxury of being able to factor in an hour each day to exercise. It's either the gym, a coastal walk or a surf, depending on how the waves are looking. So, solitary yes. Am I lonely? No, not at all.

It Can Be Difficult To 'Switch Off'

Without the need to go into the office to work, and with the motivation of working for myself, I could easily 'work' from 5am when I get up through to 10pm at night when I finally turn my computer off.

Because you're always 'at work' it can be tempting to work all the time and switching off can be difficult. It's definitely not something I've mastered or will master anytime soon, but it's certainly something I'm aware of. I have gotten a lot better at recognising when my productivity or concentration is on the slide, and calling it quits for the day.

Setting 'work hours' has helped a lot. Planning out when I will be working and when I will be taking down time stops the guilty feelings creeping in when I'm not working.

You Need Time Management And Discipline

When you do get more coffee date and lunch invitations (and you will) it can be difficult to stick to your work hours, regardless of how much of a workaholic you are. Because in your mind you can still do the work early in the morning and late at night, so why not go out and catch up.

This can also be the case when you're at home and realise that the floors need vacuuming, or that the kitchen cupboards really do need rearranging, or that you could add an extra dish to dinner tonight.

Time management and discipline are essential when working from home and different styles work for different people. It may take you a little time to work out your groove and be sure to find what does work for you rather than doing what you think you should be doing. That's why we work from home – so we can be flexible and work the way we want. Once you work out which are your most productive hours. For me personally, it's 5am until 1pm, then, I definitely need a change of scenery.

Routines Will Be Your Best Asset

Routine helps productivity so much, and it means that you don't have to use valuable mental power thinking of what you need to do next because it's all set for you.

Simple routine tasks can make such a difference. As I said, I get up at 5am every morning, make my coffee and sit down to work…the biggest plus for me has been spending just a couple of minutes the night before planning the next day's efforts. That way, I'm not starting the day by procrastinating over what needs doing.

This allows me to start the day with a few ticks in boxes of what needs to be done. I don't have a full day routine because so many things change throughout my day, but I do have little 'mini' routines that take around an hour or two that I can slot into any part of my day.

Again, it's all about working out what works for you.

    Get Out Of The House

You work there, you live there, you never leave there…well at least that's how it feels some days. Don't get too caught up in the whole 'work from home' title. Just because you work from home doesn't mean you actually have to do all of your work while you're at home. Now I said I don't want to commute to an office, though a favourite local cafe is very doable.

Get out of the house and go to your local cafe, use their free Wi-Fi, drink coffee and see your productivity go up! If cafes aren't really your thing you might prefer to head down to the beach (if you're lucky enough to live close by one) or even just to a nice big shady tree that you can sit under.

Getting outdoors and into the fresh air can really help with your productivity and healthy mindset, as well as decreasing your stress levels and getting a good dose of Vitamin D while you're at it. While it seems like there are a lot of hurdles with working from home, every place you work has hurdles and struggles, this just means you need to learn how to deal with a new set.

It feels like every few minutes something pops up to make us procrastinate, distract us, and totally suck out our motivation. Even when you love what you do, part of working from home is grappling with distractions and keeping yourself motivated throughout the day. It can be so hard to stay focused and productive!

If you're nodding along right now and thinking back to a particularly unproductive day you had in the last week working from home - I get you. Some days the struggle is so real. While I'm not perfect, I've created a few practices along the way that work well to help me get stuff done… without frantically trying to hit all my deadlines in 30 minutes late at night after procrastinating all day.

Tip 1: Keep A Super Short Daily "To Do" List

Now, let me be clear: I do have a rather large master to-do list that I'm constantly adding too. Though I've learnt that focusing on that huge to-do list day to day completely sucks my motivation and is immediately overwhelming. Trial and error has taught me that no matter how much I try to smash things out, or how many hours I work, or how much I prioritise work over everything else in my life, there's still no way I'll complete everything on my master list today/this week/or this month.

So, instead of focusing on my master to-do list day to day, I keep a super short daily to-do list, and it definitely helps keep my motivation levels high. If I know at the beginning of the day that I've only got two or three must do things that I really need to smash out, I am much more likely to get stuck straight in and get them done. A short to-do list, where I focus on my top priorities for the day, is much more motivating. I know I can tick both boxes, and move on.

Tip 2: Do your most important task first, even though it's not always the most fun.

It feels so good to hit the ground running! I like to get in there and knock over my most important task first at the beginning of my workday. Everything else feels very achievable after that. That feeling of having achieved something important before 9:00am is rewarding for me. It creates momentum, which keeps me going.

The "most important task" is also not usually the one I really want to do, nor is it the one that feels like it would be the most fun. In fact, the truth is my most important task for the day is usually something I feel a whole lot of resistance around doing. Though I'm always very relieved and happy with myself when I cross it off my list.

    Tip 3: Remove Distractions

And by "remove distractions" I mean work offline as often as you can!

For me, this is super helpful if I'm coming up with blog post content, or working on or creating a sales page, I'm able to settle down to work, focus and, as a result, create faster and much more easily when I'm offline. This works especially well when there's no option for me to be online.

Tip 4: Focus On One Thing Only

I say this because on the days where I try to multi-task, I just end up stressed, overwhelmed, and get to the end of the day with nothing of much substance done.

But if I try to focus on one task at a time… at the end of the day I can point to something and say, "Yes, I did that," and feel as if I've really pushed the needle forward.

    Tip 5. Noise Cancelling Headphones

If you can swing it, they truly make a world of difference. I'm very sensitive to noise and can become easily distracted by even a dog barking outside, particularly if I'm writing. Good headphones help me keep my sanity and stay on track. These Bose Quiet Comfort 35 wireless were a fantastic investment. I bought these headphones about a year and half ago and I use them almost daily because I just love the sound quality and the comfort.

    Tip 6: Minimise Potential Distractions

    • Turn off all notifications.
    • Put your phone on silent and resist the urge to check texts or missed calls.
    • Don't check any social media.
    • Close out your email window so new messages can distract you.

Tip 7: Know When To Call It A Day

Don't make it a habit of working until midnight every night. Unless you are truly on a roll and producing quality work deep into the night, call it quits and start again after you've had a chance to catch some shut-eye.

Keeping yourself motivated, productive and happy working from home can definitely take work. I hope my tips help you to achieve the success you deserve!

I really hope this helped. I'd love to know your favourite way to stay motivated working from home? Have I missed anything here though?

    Book Of The Week:

Profit First by Mike Michalowicz Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-making machine

The book offers simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability.

Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: sales - expenses = profit. The problem is, humans run businesses, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioural approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses.

Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, listeners will learn that:

Following four simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances.

A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line. Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth. With dozens of case studies, practical step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humour, Michalowicz has the game-changing road map for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of.

    What people are saying:

I've read a lot about business and have operated my current business for the last 10 years. Profit First is actionable business advice that I am following and would recommend to any other business owner looking for more out of their business.

As always, thank you so much for tuning in. I really hope this helped. Hey, have I missed anything here though?
