The September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, commonly known as 9/11, were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by the militant Islamic extremist network al-Qaeda against the U.S. resulting in the deaths of 2,996 people from around the world—from many nations and ethnicities.
