Humans are wired for connection, and we need to feel connected to others to function well in all areas of our lives. Though the drive for connection is innate, the skills for building healthy connections are not. People learn how to connect through their relationships with others, and it all starts in childhood. As parents, we can only teach the skills we know. In this episode, I share how connection requires the ability to be fully present with others.

Though the drive for connection is innate, the skills for building healthy connections are not. People learn how to connect through their relationships with others, and it all starts in childhood. Throughout my career working with couples and families, I have helped many people conceptualize how to talk about intimacy, connection, and sex with their children. It is such a big topic that is a struggle for most parents in some way or another—whether it is concern about doing it right or feeling terrified and wanting to avoid it. I built this series to offer some guidance in how to approach these topics beyond just the “birds and the bees.” In the final episode of this series, I shift the discussion to include the goal of preparing our children for healthy relationships when they are adults and give practical guidance in these to emphasize setting your kids up for success.
