As an institution that takes great pride in the arts, our performing arts community never ceases to amaze us. They continue to push boundaries and forge new and exciting collaborations inside and outside the classroom — through multidisciplinary partnerships, innovative teaching and community engagement. Chancellor Alexander N. Cartwright talks with three members of our Department of Theatre to explore the many ways that theatre and creativity go beyond the stage.

Dr. Suzanne Burgoyne is a Curators Distinguished Teaching Professor and the director of the Center for Applied Theatre and Drama Research. Xiomara Cornejo is a doctoral student and an associate director of the Center. And Zahria Moore is a senior McNair Scholar majoring in theatre and English, who is also a member of the Center’s Interactive Theatre Troupe.

Chancellor Cartwright talks with two graduating seniors who are going on to wonderful opportunities: Hadas Cohen is a senior earning her bachelor’s degree in textile and apparel management, who will be working as a merchandising analyst at Walmart’s corporate headquarters. Matthew Green is a senior earning his bachelor’s degree in economics and statistics, who will be working in Jefferson City as a fellow in the Missouri Data Fellows Program. We discuss some of the experiences that have shaped their time at Mizzou, and highlight the resources that have supported their journeys.

Our students have always been bold risk takers who seek discovery and innovation every day. Whether they study the skeletal anatomy of mammals in our labs here in the U.S., exhibit photography on the streets of London or develop their own Missouri farms, Mizzou students epitomize excellence as they work to generate global solutions.

Lexi Wilkinson is a senior studying psychology and English, Cole Diggins is a junior studying soil resource management and Cosette Tomita is a senior studying chemistry. We discuss the impact undergraduate research and scholarship has had on their collegiate careers and highlight the ways Mizzou supports these opportunities.

On this edition of Inside Mizzou extra, five undergraduate student scholars working on projects across the arts, humanities and science give us a window into their hands-on pursuits.

This campus community has a track record of innovation and excellence dating back to 1839. For example, MU was the first university west of the Mississippi River. And of course, we developed the first — and best — journalism school in the nation. Now, through programs such as the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, the UM System Entrepreneur Quest and the Unions Entrepreneurial Program, our students, faculty and staff continue to expand the university’s community impact through innovation and entrepreneurship.
