As the largest alternative break program at any university in the United States, Mizzou Alternative Breaks is driven by a simple but powerful motto: “Get Out. Give Back.” More than 1,000 students participated this year in trips across the globe — some even right here in Missouri.

From 1998-2000, Keyon Dooling was a leader on the Mizzou basketball team. His stellar college career helped him become the 10th basketball player in MU’s history to be drafted in the NBA’s first round, where would go on to play for teams such as the Los Angeles Clippers and the Orlando Magic. But for Keyon, life after basketball as director of the National Basketball Players Association mental health and wellness program proved to be an even more seminal role.

As a public, land-grant university, Mizzou has a proud history of service — from education to healthcare, public safety to our military. Join Chancellor Cartwright for this week’s Inside Mizzou podcast where he talks with ROTC cadets Kim Woods, a senior studying mechanical and aerospace engineering; and Ben Steger, a sophomore studying civil engineering. When Dr. George P. Smith was announced as one of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry winners, the Royal Swedish Academy confirmed what all of us at Mizzou have always known: Work that happens here changes the world.

Dr. Smith’s research has led to new treatments for arthritis, cancer, autoimmune disorders and more. Now, he joins a list of extraordinary scientists who, since 1895, have been honored for their breakthrough discoveries and innovative solutions to some of humanity’s biggest challenges.

Now in its 107th year, Homecoming is a comprehensive tradition that embraces so many aspects of the Tiger spirit. From the parade to the blood drive, the football game to decorating the windows around downtown, this event celebrates what makes Mizzou special and what unites the Mizzou community. But with so many things going on and people involved, what does it actually take to make a Mizzou Homecoming happen?

Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are two members of this year’s Homecoming Steering Committee: Nnamdi Okoli, a senior on the parade committee studying accounting; and Tri-Director Jenna Cederblad, a senior studying health science. They discuss what it takes to plan, organize and execute one of Mizzou’s most historic traditions.

For centuries, art has been a tool to document and study culture. Today, art forms like animation, film and digital storytelling create dynamic opportunities for cultural study, particularly the study of indigenous cultures. Missouri has a particularly rich Native American history. Even our state’s name derives from the Missouria tribe and translates to “one who has dugout canoes.” So, how does contemporary art help reveal the rich culture of Native Americans?

Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are Joseph Erb, assistant teaching professor in digital storytelling, and Ryder Jiron, a junior studying communications who is also the president of Four Directions. They discuss art, identity and how both of these enrich our understanding of indigenous cultures.

Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are Ashton Dobson, a Mizzou cheerleader and senior studying journalism with an emphasis in strategic communication, and Hunter Willow, a Marching Mizzou drum major and junior studying public health. We discuss what makes Tiger Football so special and how these two unique roles help generate Tiger pride during games.

We’ve heard about it a lot this summer: drought. Most of Missouri is abnormally dry, and over 30 counties are experiencing extreme drought. But what exactly does all this talk about drought mean to the state and its people?

Joining Chancellor Cartwright this week are Dr. Bob Sharp, professor in the Division of Plant Sciences and director of the Interdisciplinary Plant Group; and Shannon King, a doctoral student in biochemistry working under Doctors Scott Peck (biochemistry), Felix Fritschi (plant sciences) and Bob Sharp. They discuss the ways we understand and study drought, as well as explore how the research happening right here at Mizzou can help Missouri communities combat this pressing challenge.
