Mr. Kamawe is a Kenyan-born Hip Hop artist and entrepreneur currently living in Atlanta, Georgia. During our conversation, Mr. Kamawe gave us his perspective of what life was like in a 90’s-era Nairobi; Kenya’s capital city. Evidently, at the time, Mr. Kamawe reflects, there was a clear lack of opportunities for the youth to engage in meaningful activities. Conscious of this reality, Mr. Kamawe chose Hip Hop as a lens through which he could imagine a brighter future. In the 90s, Hip Hop culture had also just begun making serious waves globally. This further inspired Mr. Kamawe’s journey once the decision to study in the United States came about in his latter teen years.
Mr. Kamawe’s story offers an outlook on the struggles that young diaspora often encounters as they strive to juggle their education and self-actualisation. Through his undying will to express, as well as find himself, Mr. Kamawe acknowledges the growth that has inevitably followed his decades-long life in America.
At the time of the interview, Mr. Kamawe had just undergone the major milestone of getting married weeks prior. Therefore, we also got a chance to explore the realm of family and relationships. “God first, and family second,” Mr. Kamawe says, and he keeps these aspects close to his heart and art.

As we come closer to the new season of Represented, we'd like to revisit some of our favorite episodes from the first season. This week we're revisiting Nyex's conversation with an old friend, Ally.
Ally Baharoon is a child of Gerezani, Dar-Es-Salaam in Tanzania. His growth as a playwright, performer and comedian is rooted in how he saw the people of Gerezani work relentlessly to achieve their goals. Growing up, Ally noted how hard his mother worked, sharpening his awareness of the importance of "grinding". Conversely, Ally's late father gifted him with the spirit of exploration which has also been a catalyst for great things in his life; including his creativity. Centered on his ultimate truth and the search for creative ways to pass on a valuable message - "Shwanga" as Ally calls it - this English grad's work is chockful with meaning. With Ally's help, we uncover the true essence of "Shwanga" while discussing life, love, family and friendship (in Ally's opinion, there should be no delineation between "family" and "friend").

Muthoni (aka Noni) is a Kenyan-born, Petroleum Engineering grad living and working in Canada. Despite Noni's early life posing a variety of challenges, it revealed a stronger and more determined individual who spreads joy everywhere she goes. The turmoil caused by past abusive relationships, as well as battles with low self-esteem often prevented Noni from giving herself a chance to move forward. Now, however, Noni stands strong having removed herself from unhealthy ties as she pursues her passions such as traveling. Noni is also focused on building a better financial future for herself, but only through the things she loves. The icing on the cake for Noni is that as she re-discovers her true self, she has the opportunity to strengthen her relationships with her chosen family all over Canada that loves and supports her.
