Christopher Constantino, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Assistant Professor at Florida State University, joins Sara MacIntyre, M.A., CCC-SLP to discuss his research related to better understanding covert stuttering and the reasons why individuals who covertly stutter decide to pass as fluent. Chris proposes that individuals who pass as fluent choose to pass more as an active, 'survival' tactic in today's able-body dominated society rather than a passive repression of one's authentic self that has historically been proposed. Later, Chris shares clinical implications of his research and how we, as clinicians, can better serve individuals who pass as fluent the better we understand the true interaction of stuttering and society.
