  • Unraveling Communication Barriers with guest Speech-Language Pathologist Suzy Carbrey, MA, CCC-SLP

At some point in all of our lives, we have experienced the fallout of ineffective communication. Messages may be misconstrued or the delivery of the message may be taken out of context.   Communicating with a loved one who may have an attention deficit, who has suffered a traumatic brain injury, dementia, Alzheimer's, or other neurological disorders can prove to build even bigger barriers.   Attorney Gwendolyn J. Sterk speaks with Speech-Language Pathologist Suzy Carbrey, MA, CCC-SLP about ways to start the communication process, how to overcome some common barriers, and discuss some tips for families to work better to communicate.

  • Empowering Youth To Be Brave and Bold

Being a teenager is tough but throw in social media, a pandemic, and other world events and it may be even tougher than many adults may realize.

Teens today have unique circumstances to face and that may bring unique mental responses.  Ryan Hesslau and his team at ForeverU have set out to be advocates and provide resources and support for youth and empower them to be brave and bold.

Tune in to hear what Ryan has to say about their programming and their mission!

ForeverU was founded in 2012 by Ryan Hesslau at only sixteen years old after learning about a local high school student who had unfortunately died by suicide. This tragedy prompted Ryan to begin researching the stories of other young people who also lost their battle to an underlying mental health condition. After collecting concerning statistics about how often young people died by suicide, Ryan became determined to bring knowledge about mental health to the forefront of local communities, normalize the conversations about mental health altogether, and create a robust program model that would help youth who are struggling find the resilience to keep living.

  • Resource Sessions

Located in Orland Park, IL, Sterk Family Law Group, P.C. is family law and estate planning practice that offers a unique approach to family law and estate planning through not only a team approach but also through a holistic approach by relying on numerous resources.

Our firm leader, Gwendolyn Sterk, has been practicing law for over 30 years. After spending many years with another firm, in 2015, Gwen decided to open her own legal practice. Gwen has always been a thought leader and what stemmed her desire to open her own practice was seeing client’s needs for assistance outside of the legal realm when facing a legal matter. With a single business card for a mental health provider passed to a client, Gwen dreamed up what is now, today, Sterk Family Law group’s Resource Center.

So why are we doing podcasts? Well, we stand behind the motto that "knowledge is power" and like our slogan says, to "Empower Yourself With Options."

Many of the episodes you may listen to may not be directly focused on legal matters because there are lot of moving pieces in the game of life and we hope that the information you hear here, may help you or someone you care about.
