When the Coronavirus began to spread out of Wuhan China, Italy became the first target. Restaurants were completely closed at first. Then, eventually things loosened to allow takeout and delivery. Two styles of eating that most Italians had rarely experienced. After 2 months the restaurants started come back with restrictions. Restrictions that are somewhat easier to swallow than those imposed so far by most states as they give permission to resume the restaurant business.
Episode Highlights:
- Michael Cortelletti’s Food Democracy ; a small group of hospitality businesses including artisan pizza, pasta restaurants, an ice cream shop and a financial interest in winemaking, brewing and hospitality technology.
- The prescient re-arranging of credit and financing helped Food Democray ride the shutdown wave a little more comfortably than most restaurants or restaurant groups.
- Italian government’s version of a Payroll Protection Plan
- Pizza and Pasta are not good travel companions. There was a learning curve to the new operating model of takeout and delivery.
