In Jesus' time, as in ours, there were many people peddling a counterfeit vision of moral virtue. All of us, however religious or irreligious we may be, can very easily exchange righteousness for self-righteousness.  But the best way to expose a counterfeit is to compare it to the genuine article - which is precisely what Jesus does in this section of the Sermon on the Mount.

Is it possible for strength, competence and confidence to be liabilities? Judges 7 shows us that they are when they lead us to total self-reliance. In Gideon's story we see that God sometimes purposely weakens his people, so that they will recognise their dependence on His salvation. When we have no choice but to admit our weakness, that is when God's power will be most clearly displayed.

What kind of person does God ask to join in with his work? If we think that God would choose only the best, the brightest, the morally upright and the spiritually confident - Gideon's story proves otherwise.  In Judges 6 we see that though God clearly perceives the sins of His people and calls them to repent, He uses faltering and fearful people to advance His saving purposes.

What happens when God is determined to achieve His purposes, but His people are unwilling to help? Will God's purposes be thwarted? Certainly not! Judges 4-5 shows us the great danger for God's people is missing out on being part of His great deliverance, and the great danger for His enemies is trusting in their own strength.

Sin is a real problem. It causes us pain and shame, it corrupts our relationships with other people and it destroys our relationship with God. Yet even when we identify the problems that sin causes, it can still feel impossible to break out of sinful patterns. This section of Judges describes the downward spiral of sin that God's people became trapped within as they entered the land; but it also reveals a God of compassion that is not willing to simply abandon His people to the mess they have made.
