Usually, when Christians talk about "abiding in Jesus," they are referring to individual practices like private prayer or Bible study. Certainly, those things are good and necessary for life with Jesus - but are they actually what Jesus is talking about when he invites us to abide in him? 

How do we separate Jesus' invitation to abide from our cultural tendency toward rugged individualism? What should be our motivation for abiding? What is the best method to abide? In John 14:8, Philip makes a request of Jesus - "Lord, show us the Father and it will be enough for us." As Jesus responds, we discover that he came to do much more than simply show us the Father. He came to reveal the Father. To represent the Father. And that changes everything about our relationship with God.

There are times for all of us when our hearts are troubled. When it feels as if our souls are a ship tossed on the seas of anxiety and uncertainty. Even Jesus himself experienced a troubled heart in his life. It is unavoidable. And yet, Jesus speaks to our hearts in the midst of their trouble, and meets us in our moments of greatest need.

So what do you do when your heart is troubled?

All Christians live in the midst of a profound tension: Jesus has established his Kingdom in his life, death, and resurrection, and yet we await the Kingdom of God to be fully realized. What are we supposed to to in the meantime? How are we to live in this tension?

In John 13, Jesus instructs us on how to live in this tension - "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another." But how should we love? How can we love like Jesus is calling us? What makes this commandment new? And what happens when we love like this?
