E61: The Ins and Outs of Blogging, SEO and Internet Marketing

My name is Kellen Kautzman and I came across SEO first as a blogger. My first SEO related goal was to get one million views through writing articles on various platforms on the web. I have far surpassed that goal and have become a partner with Las Vegas SEO and internet marketing company ADvise Media Group.I hold a Master's degree from The University of Minnesota and taught for four years as an ESL and Spanish teacher. I've run operations at Advise media group for four years as well and have a beautiful family, wife Lonaeja, daughter Anika and son Phoenix.

We all want to be on the first page of Google and get our business found online at the top of our industry. We want to rank for what we do, but we don't want to pay the big prices to get there. Kellen is here to help you understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and what you can do in your business to rank higher.

Kellen got into internet marketing through blogging. He has a Master Degree in Education and already had a great job teaching School in Minnesota. Why the change of career when you are already established? The answer is simple...Residual income-It's what can happen after you put a lot of time, effort and sometimes money into a job to continue to get paid for the work months or years after it's done. Basically an income will come in even when you're not on the clock. Kellen saw this opportunity in blogging. For every 1,000 views on what he would write he would earn money. This way he could make money on the side and prove to himself that this works. It is also very hard and discouraging to make a living wage as a writer. He would work in the day at his teaching job and come home and write. So Kellen wrote, wrote, wrote, and wrote to hit his goal of getting a million views. 

Business hint: when Kellen found a blog post that was doing well he would analyze what the blog was about and why it did so well and then replicate that same process.

A blog post is an asset. It has to be well written and must have a strong foundation. If both of these are in the blog then it can last a really long time and continue to make you money. If you already have a decent business following and you are looking to grow your business a blog can be very helpful and an effective way to start your SEO experience.

This drove him to change his career for good and the cold of Minnesota was too much so he and his wife moved to Las Vegas in their down market. Kellen started working at ADvise Media Group as a blogger and after 4 years worked his way up to partner in the company.

Since this time, he has set out to do the things he loves and that is to demystify Internet marketing and SEO. One of the best ways Kellen has found to be effective is to say NO. Most business in Internet Market say yes to everything, but in reality they need to hear NO. You can't get to the top of google unless you pay the price. You can't rank over your competitors for $1000 a month when they pay $10,000 month to rank. If the marketing dollars won't convert Kellen wont even take that contract because it really comes down to knowing what will work and what will not. You need an expert to help you figure this out or you will spend years trying to crack the SEO code.

The significance of a website is shaped by the words on it. Blogging is the best path to increase significance in a given area.

E59: Taking 1 Step Back & 2 Steps Forward to Success

Brad is the owner of Egg Works and Egg and I family Restaurants. Brad is a graduate of UNLV and has successful managed and ran other restaurants in Las Vegas. He currently has over 300 employees and 6 restaurants with a commissary home office. Brad spends his time checking in on his customers, managers, and spends a good amount of time developing his hot sauces, bloody Mary's, salsa's, and many other items. Brad is also a pinball addict and has 30 machines that he loves to play and tinker with.

Many times we hear only about the failures in the restaurant business, and little about success. Today we are going to change this and share with you what success is in the restaurant world and how you can turn your passion into a thriving business.

We brought Brad Burdsall owner of Egg Works, and the Egg and I family Restaurants to share his secret sauce that has turned his passion for cooking into 6 locations and a commissary (home office).

Brad originally grew up in Ohio and started his college career at the University of Cincinnati. He left Ohio when his father decided that short trips to Las Vegas as a Professional Poker Player needed more time and he uprooted his family and moved to Las Vegas to continue his career. Brad continued his education at UNLV in Hotel/Restaurant field and Graduated in 1993.

Brad started out cooking at a young age and loved the reactions he received from those that ate his food. He kept himself in the food business to learn everything he could. He worked at Olive Garden waiting tables, a server at the Mirage Coffee Shop, and a Chef and Manager at the Macaroni Grill. All of these experiences along with his dedication working on business plans for Cinci's Chilli, and Egg Works prepared him for his first restaurant purchase. Brad purchased the "Egg & I" in 1998 and this was both exciting and scary as his first business purchase.

Brad has since opened 5 Egg Works locations and a Commissary Home Office. Brad knows that opening 1 store is tough, and the 2nd store is just as hard, but once you move on past 2 locations the easier it gets and the more prepared you and your staff are. This brings us to share the importance of training your staff. You need to invest the time and money into proper training and hiring the right employees, because they can make or break you. It is just as important to listen to what your customers needs and wants are as you help educate your customers to the level of service you offer.

Without passion for your business you you lose your focus. Even when starting out in your business like Brad did in his early days when he wore all the hats in his business from doing payroll, paying bills, cooking, cleaning and managing his restaurants. He did all of this until he met a man that gave him the best advice "You have 2 choices - working for your company or working to grow your company". Brad went from working in the business to working on the business.

Brad had his hands all over the business and letting that go was hard, but in order to find success he needed to step back and give control to his managers. The key to this success is surrounding yourself with good strong people. The other challenge Brad needed to fix was inconsistency of food at each location. One item particular is their top selling Banana Nut Muffins. They started to produce the muffins at their commissary and deliver these fresh to each location. They bake 2500 muffins a day along with great tasting chili, taco meat and much more made to be the same taste you love at each location.

Brad has done extremely well in the restaurant business and now has 300 employees. As you grow their needs to be processes in order to help with the people.

I have been in Las Vegas since 1960 and attended UNLV in 1966. In the past 50+ years I have watched this community grow and prosper. I continue to love the community and the people in the Las Vegas valley. I have extensive marketing and sales background including working with Steve Wynn for 10 years. I purchased the Social Register of Las Vegas in 1997 because of my passionate commitment to helping businesses grow.

Businesses of every size have an opportunity to network with other professionals during our variety of monthly events. A vital part of the Social Register is enabling small companies to build business partnerships and expand their products and services in a professional networking environment. Medium and large organizations find membership extremely valuable to promote and expand their brand, products and services.

With over 2,400 members, the Social Register of Las Vegas is the premier Las Vegas business networking organization. We provide the opportunity for networking in smaller intimate groups as well as larger more social events.

We all know Steve Wynn, but have you ever wondered what it would have been like working for him during his early days in Las Vegas?  In today’s show, Dave had the opportunity of talking with Clair Zeto who worked for Steve for over 10 years at the Golden Nugget, which was prior to her taking over and building her current business, The Social Register of Las Vegas.

Clair’s story is one of determination and hard work mixed with a lot of creativity. In fact, Clair started her entrepreneurial journey by just wanting to serve others as a member of The Social Register and the next thing she knew she was its proud owner.  This is a can’t miss show for those of you who are looking to be inspired by a life of passion and hard work.

You share a big part of your Las Vegas history with some true leaders.

Clair Zeto has been a resident in the Las Vegas community since 1960. She has an impressive background as VIP Director for the Golden Nugget and was personally recruited by Bobby Baldwin and Steve Wynn and worked with them for 10 years.

You must have some great experiences being involved in those days with the VIP's?

I worked with big names like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Diana Ross, Willie Nelson and members of the original Rat Pack. Our jobs were to set the rooms before the guests would arrive and make sure they had whatever they wanted. Wine, cigars, gifts, etc. We were to wine and dine these guests to ensure they were taken care of. That meant parties, limo's, food, etc. We have 10 executives, 5 butlers, and many others to help us out.

Did you get any strange request?

One time we had a high roller stay in the presidential suites and our job was to ensure he had the best birthday experience. We would get all the staff we could from other departments and invite them to come party at the guests room. I was called up to the room to take care of a situation to find girls sliding down the staircase rail. Each time the girls went down they were paid $100.

The Beginning of the Social Register for Clair

Once Clair's children moved onto school full-time she wanted to get involved. She joined the Social Register in 1996 with about 220 members. The club at that time was just a social club and no business networking was going on. Clair started to get more involved and asked about volunteering her time to do more events with the previous owner and within 10 minutes he said he wanted to sell the business and within 3 months Clair was the new owner.

Clair saw the need immediately to add a business division because how different Las Vegas was and it needed to have this added to the Social Register.

E55: From College Mascot to Mood Director

GUEST: Jon "Jersey" Goldman

Jon "Jersey" Goldman is an eccentric and extremely energetic worker, performer, and entertainer currently working in numerous fields in the Las Vegas industry. Quoted many times to be the epitome of the saying "Jack of all trades, master of none", Goldman has been commended for his hard work, dedication, and unmatched spirit for all of his "teams" in the restaurant, sports, retail, hotel, and radio industries. Goldman started his work career in 2005 working for a minor league baseball team in Southern New Jersey known as the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. He continued his work throughout high school in the restaurant business, working at a small 81-seat 50's/60's diner-like venue called "The Pop Shop" in his hometown of Collingswood, New Jersey. After moving across the country to attend the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Goldman became known to the community as "Jersey", a name given to him by members of the Delta Chi fraternity, which he is now an alum. Throughout his 6 years at UNLV, he performed as over 42 mascots across the country, most notably "Hey Reb", the mascot for UNLV. He worked on-air for the #1 station in Vegas, 98.5 KLUC, as well as in promotions, joined the sports marketing team in UNLV Athletics, and was an integral part of the undergraduate student government experience, constantly fighting for the best experience for students. Currently, Jersey works for the Hakkasan Nightclub and Wet Republic Ultra Pool as the Mood Director, and was recently featured in the Hulu docu-series, "Behind the Mask", which followed him for a year in all of his endeavors and life experiences as UNLV's mascot both inside and outside of the suit. Goldman is known for in energy, eccentric attitude, leadership skills, and for his passion for both his work, and his family. He lives by the quote, "If you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life".

Jon talks with Dave about his time as Hey Reb and how that experience has helped him be a better businessman.  Jon also talks about how important it is to do what you love and why you need to treat every customer encounter as if it is the first experience that customer has ever had with your business.  This is a great show for those of you who are trying to improve your brand image and an even better show for those of you who are Rebel fans.

How do you stay motivated? Jon "Jersey" started out as a viking mascot in high school and moved on to his local minor league baseball team to continue his mascot adventures. He found joy making others happy and how could you not make others happy after being 17 different mascots including: chick-fil-a cow, shark, fish, and even a dancing trash man. Jersey turned series when he met the St. Joseph University mascot "the hawk". Standing in a room with just 2 others and the hawk continued to flap his wings and this bothered Jersey. The Hawk said "I get a $75,000 scholarship for 2 years and besides not talking and taking my mask off, the only rule I have is I can't stop flapping my wings, because a hawk never dies. He started to apply to every college as a mascot and in 2008 he was accepted for a full ride scholarship to UNLV. 

What was life like as a mascot at UNLV and tv star? Jersey made the best of his years at UNLV with a full ride scholarship and helped grow the school spirit and many other organizations at UNLV. Jersey did everything from shooting fire out of his finger tips, crowd surfing,
