  • Dragnet – Big Break. ep79, 501214
Robbery Detail. After tracking a hold up man for months, the cops are ready to make their move.
On a cold night in Los Angeles, the night watch get ready to take down the well armed, fortified George Hoffman. The desperate criminal isn’t afraid to make a standoff, rather than be taken to jail again. The shoot out runs its course and yet another criminal is taken into custody.
In voiceover, Joe Friday reviews the booking, and preparations for the preliminary hearing. Also the mundane event of a fellow cop, who got a black eye from coaching boxing. Just when it looks to be another routine day, word comes that Hoffman has broken out of jail, and is on the rampage again.
The cops discuss the intent to break out from the day Hoffman was taken, and the exercises he did to strengthen his hands. Despite his spree of crime, none of George’s usual contacts, or haunts has any word of where he is located. An interview with toy train enthusiast, Roy Townsend, might offer their first clue.
A stakeout is set up, where Ben and Joe make small talk about those toy trains, but months would go by, as Joe later shares in voiceover. Through a weird twist of fate, Hoffman goes straight, joins the Army, and goes overseas…. Or does he? Hoffman has a knack for robbing, and escaping, but Joe may have proved that Hoffman has met his match. Has Hoffman escaped for the last time?

The scene opens with three old gents looking for a farm that lays East of town. With a little help from a star they get their bearings. Doc Miller has sent them out with groceries for the family in need. The family has come on hard times after a fire, and are forced to spend the wintery night in a barn.
The humble scene is described as Lum, Abner, and grandpap draw close to the barn. The details of the hardship of the family is described, and a charitable spirit is present as the gents all talk about extending their homes to the weary travellers.
At the barn, Doc Miller sheds some light as to how to help the carpenter out, and provide for the family with the baby being born tonight. The sentimental scene wraps up with a carol that goes hand in hand with the events of the night.

  • Abbott and Costello – Christmas Shopping. 441214.
Lou is excited as he tells about his cousin who is serving in the military in Africa. He talks to Bud about the Christmas gifts they have recieved, and anticipate recieving. Lou talks about his new girlfriend, her appearance, and the gift he is going to give her.
Bud gets Lou confused over explaining a thing or two about pianos. The jokes break down into a sketch where Bud has Lou loan him money, and turns it around so Lou ends up owing Bud instead. Definitely a classic moment. Commercial time.
Connie Haines sings, Trolley Ride. Wow, what a popular song, I think she has sang it the most of any other song on the programs. At least of the programs that still exist.
Bud and Lou take their own trolley ride and do some Christmas shopping. Lou has a couple close encounters with female travellers. In the department store they run into Sebastian who has a job as a floor walker.
Shouldn’t Sebastian be at school? He tells why he is skipping it. He gets confused over what a deer is, then Mr Kitzel the store manager arrives. Kitzel helps Bud and Lou pick out Christmas Gifts for their loved ones. More commercial time.
    Freddie Rich plays, Whispering.
After three hours of shopping, Lou still hasn’t found that perfect gift for his gal. Whew, that was a long song that Freddie Rich played.
Lou gets confused over Bud’s suggestion for making a gift of a pair of mules. I can’t blame him, I haven’t heard of that term for house slippers either.
Lou gets more confused at a sales lady who has a unique speaking style. Also about the perfume, and other products she’s trying to sell. Even more confusion reigns over word plays on hair styles, and figures of speech. Lou gets to try out a machine designed to reduce weight. Does it work? You’ll have to listen and find out.
As an epilog, Bud and Lou plug the need for women to join the Army Nurse Corps.
