  • EP 34: Confessions of a Compliant Woman Part 2

Join me for my first solo episode since the summer where I'm trying something new and outside of my comfort zone - recording a whole episode without having my words carefully planned.

This episode is raw, vulnerable and one of my favorite solo episodes thus far.

    Here's what we cover:

    • How I'm letting go of the script and learning to trust myself
    • An overview of the compliant woman archetype and why I'm using this term instead of "good girl program
    • The 5 manifestations of the compliant woman:
    • Self silencing: how we use this strategy to manipulate others into seeing us a certain way in order to feel safe and avoid intimacy with ourselves and others
    • Self denial- exploring the vulnerability of our big feelings and ways in which we deny our bodies biological needs because we often see our needs as an inconvenience
    • Self sacrifice- The badge of honor we believe we'll get on the other side of self-sacrifice, especially mothers and how this truly benefits no one
    • Self limitation- The responsibility of being with and expressing our full self and how scary that can truly be
    • Self questioning- The "who am I to's" that keep us from owning the fullness of who we are
    • How awareness allows us to choose differently
    • Taking small and slow action to create change and heal from the compliant woman

In this week's episode, I am chatting with Life Coach Jeanine. She is the author of a new book, Team You. This book helps you befriend your inner world within, so all sides of you can work together on the same team.

Here are the 2 quotes that Jeanine mentioned in the episode:

  • EP 28: It's Not Your Partner's Job To Make You Feel Alive with Chelsea Horton

This conversation with Chelsea Horton is absolute magic! Chelsea is the founder and CEO of Healing Embodied and she helps people heal from relationship anxiety so that they can pursue loving, fulfilling relationships without all of the doubt and worry.

We covered so much ground in this conversation and Chelsea and I were so delighted to uncover the many parallels in our paths - including our mutual love of early 2000's hip hop and r&b.

    Here's what we cover:

    • How Chelsea learned to fragment herself growing up in a religious, fundamentalist environment where she learned not to trust herself
    • How learning to be in her body again allowed her to heal and come back to wholeness
    • Her unconventional relationship advice: IT'S NOT YOUR PARTNERS JOB TO MAKE YOU FEEL ALIVE (or make you feel anything at all)
    • That our relationships are a reflection of how we feel about ourselves
    • The codependent messages we learn about what relationships "should" look like
    • How relationship anxiety often manifests as doubts about our partner and how to discern when it's actually "your stuff"
    • Triggers being an opportunity for self inquiry
    • The power of being in relationships with people who are different than us because of what we might get to learn about ourselves
    • How our bodies are always reflecting the state of our mind and using movement to navigate challenging emotions
    • The 3 pillars of self trust
    • How intuition is not infallible and how to listen to your intuition while still being open to uncertainty
    • Learning through contrast

I loved this conversation with Chelsea so much! If you got something from this episode, please share it with a friend or on social media tagging both me (holly.toronto) and Chelsea (healing.embodied)

  • EP 27: Taking Radical Responsibility with Madison Morrigan

Since starting this podcast, Madison Morrigan has been at the top of my dream guest list and needless to say, I'm thrilled to be connecting with her today.

I was initially attracted to Madison's work because of the way she approaches "buzzy" ideas like sovereignty and self responsibility. She is a coach who leads with integrity and her desire is truly to help you come home to your power, worth and wholeness...not point out your brokenness.

As usual, our conversation was dynamic, covering so many different topics:

    • Madison’s most recent experience of uncovering a fragmented part of herself, her queerness and her journey of leaving her marriage and starting a relationship with a woman
    • Not needing other people’s projections or opinions in order to affirm new iterations of ourselves
    • Her commitment to shining a light on what is good in her life
    • Being able to address harm in the world around us from a stable and grounded place
    • How a little extra presence, attention and beauty can contribute to a life of joy and celebration, whether that’s garnishing your food or lighting a candle
    • Increasing our capacity to experience joy more fully
    • How constantly chasing the highs of life can cause us to experience more “crash and burn” or lows as our nervous system’s try to find homeostasis
    • Our mutual desire for a stable if not, boring life
    • Unhooking from societal expectations of what life should look like and seeking a life of alignment
    • Self responsibility as not another way to bypass, ignore or excuse the behavior/abuse of others but to reclaim our power and be the adult in our lives
    • Divesting from belief systems that don’t align with our values
    • The politics of self responsibility and taking over responsibility to the point of self blame

  • EP 26: The Pursuit of Status with Julie Ohlemacher

Our girl, Julie Ohlemacher, is back to help me break down a juicy and deeply personal topic - status seeking.

When we live in a world that teaches us our starting place is "un-worth," it's only natural that we'll feel an impulse to fill ourselves through traditional status symbols like wealth, career, relationships and material possessions. Yet often those pursuits leave us feeling empty, unfulfilled and like we're just not enough.

Join Julie and I for this vulnerable episode that almost feels like you're getting a peak into a journal entry as we discuss:

    • Looking to themes in nature for guidance and support from Spirit
    • The lessons we've both been learning on surrendering control
    • How stress, chaos and uncertainty might cause someone to fall back on outdated patterns/strategies in order to feel like they have control
    • The nonlinear nature of growth and allowing for cycles of expansion and contraction
    • Our inability to control what other people think of us, while also being within our power to not invest our energy in their opinions or thoughts
    • Status seeking as being all about other's perceptions of us
    • Examining our choices to uncover if they are coming from status seeking/ego or our deepest desires
    • How constantly seeking status creates a void of never enough
    • Choosing to also see rest as success
    • Shifting our focus from external status seeking to happiness, joy and fulfillment in our daily lives
