  • EP 24: What Drives Your Purpose with Linda Kay Klein

I am so excited to introduce your to Linda Kay Klein who, along with being a personal mentor of mine, has a list of accomplishments and credentials too long to list in these show notes!

She is the founder and president of Break Free Together, a nonprofit storytelling organization dedicated to helping people release shame and claim their whole selves, and a deconstruction & purity culture recovery coach.

While Linda's work has centered around helping people heal after purity culture, she has so many valuable insights around purpose and moving beyond the "good/bad" binary.

Her courage to write her book, Pure, even though it threatened to disrupt her relationships and sense of belonging in her community is so inspiring and paramount to the theme of Return to Wholeness.

    We talk about:

    • How everything from her confidence to her charisma to her desire to hang out with boys was sexualized when she was a child
    • Leaving her religious community in order to have herself
What led her to write her book, Pure
    • The difference between purity culture and the purity movement and how federal money was used to fund abstinence based sex education
    • The different drives behind our purpose (joy, thriving, "can't stopness"
    • Moving beyond the binary of good/bad in order to see ourselves as complex, whole human beings

  • EP 23: Belief Beyond The Binary with Lindsey Lockett

I am thrilled to have Lindsey Lockett back on the show for her 3rd appearance! In this episode, we discuss Lindsey's new online program, Belief Beyond The Binary.

After spending much of her life moving from one binary belief system to another (evangelical Christianity to diet culture to social justice activism), Lindsey has worked to train her brain, her nervous system and her heart to be more comfortable in the grey.

As you'll learn in this episode, seeing the world from a binary set of beliefs is harmful not only to ourselves, but also to our relationships and communities.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • How anything can become a binary belief system and why someone might be more inclined to turn something into a bbs
    • The self transformation that happened for her in creating Belief Beyond The Binary
    • Separating people from ideologies and understanding that people who fall into bbs aren't nefarious, but often good people who are very scared
    • How the 'hive mind' or group think is created
    • The outsourcing of our goodness to external sources like activism, religion or diet culture
    • Our propensity to always find an enemy to fight
    • What role our sense of belonging plays in leading us to proselytize about our beliefs to others
    • Allowing your beliefs to be something you choose vs something you're coerced into
    • The difference between online activism and harassment
    • The dangers of compelled speech and the expectation that everyone on the internet be a geopolitical expert
    • Learning to coexist with people who think differently than us
    • The importance of boundaries in moving beyond binary belief systems

Lindsey's passion for this work shines through in this episode and is one of the many reasons I trust her as a leader in this space. I have been going through Belief Beyond The Binary myself and it's been incredibly insightful and healing for me.

This week I am joined by Lindsey Curtis, Dream Therapist and Female Embodiment Mentor. Lindsey has a wealth of knowledge on self-mothering, dreaming and sensuality so our conversation covered a range of topics including:

    • How self mothering allows us to access wholeness, create a new future and rewrite the past
    • Inner mothering as an act of self responsibility
    • A powerful visualization exercise about connecting to the inner child
    • Seeing resistance as a green light to begin a journey of reclamation
    • How disconnection from inner mother shows up in the world around us, as well as in our relationship with ourselves
    • Her frame on becoming the "adult woman" in your life and what it means to be an adult who infuses play and joy into their lives
    • Dreaming as our primordial language
    • How to work with nightmares and reoccurring dreams
    • Sensuality as the foundation of our human experience and the creative power that awakens when we tap into our sensuality

    In this episode, I share:

    • A reminder that Body Image Boost is still open for enrollment and getting started on Sunday August 1st (not Monday August 1st like I said in the episode - whoops!) Link below to sign up
    • Why it's important for me to be honest and real with you about what how challenging 2021 has been for me
    • How I've surrounded myself with support during this season
    • That I, too, sometimes ignore my intuition and my body's requests for rest and nourishment

  • EP 20: Your Body Is A Freaking Miracle

    OMG She's back again!

My girl, Jules, is joining me for another powerful body image episode and a special announcement about our new 14 day program that is getting started on August 1st, Body Image Boost: https://julesandhollcoaching.com/14day-body-image-boost

In this episode, we discuss the paradox of being more than your body AND a body at the same time and how that guides us on our journey from objectification to personification.

We get super meta which truly serves as deepening into a conversation you may feel like you have heard 100x already.

    We discuss:

    • Not allowing body image to come between you and your best life
    • Honoring and respecting the passing down of generational bodily characteristics (your mom's arms, your grandmother's eyes, your dad's hair color)
    • How miraculous and statistically improbable you being born was (1 in 400 trillion)
    • How incredibly wise our bodies are and how that can be an opening for more trust and connection
    • Shifting to gratitude for your body for getting you through lockdown vs worrying about weight gain
    • How to elevate who you are as a person vs what you look like

It was such a rich conversation that took twists and turns we didn't expect.

If it stirred something in you, join us for Body Image Boost as this program will allow you to embody much of what you learned today:

  • EP 19: Your Body Isn't The Problem with Science Based Intuitive Eating Coach Victoria Evans

This week I'm joined by Science Based Intuitive Eating Coach, Victoria Evans and we had a KICK ASS conversation. Even though I've practiced and used Intuitive Eating for 5 years, I found myself learning from Victoria which is such a gift and a testament to just how complex the work of healing your relationship to your body and food can be.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • How body shame is the ultimate fragmentation from our wholeness
    • Grieving your dieting identity
    • How perfectionist fantasies keep us from taking responsibility for our lives in the present
    • The evolutionary/primal reasons we diet and pursue weight loss
    • Healing generational wounds of conforming for connection
    • Hiding the most valuable aspects of ourselves because we are ashamed of how we look
    • The role certain brain chemicals play in compulsive behaviors around food
    • What's really happening in our brains when we restrict food
    • How shame activates the same part of our brain that is activated when we experience physical pain which will lead to self soothing behaviors
    • Self sabotage as a form of self protection
    • The importance of human connection on our overall health and overindulging in introversion

And so much more! It was such a dynamic conversation and I can't wait for you to listen.

  • EP 18: Ritual + Embodiment As Tools For Healing with Kimberlee

This week I am joined by Kimberlee of @sacredreturning. She is a writer who has been engaging with a community on Instagram for the last few years, focusing on rebuilding life and spirituality after leaving evangelicalism. She is currently writing a book about her process and experience of releasing purity culture through ritual and embodied practices.

    In this episode we discuss:

    • The message she learned growing up in the church that taught her to deny herself, ignore her body and emotions and instead listen to outside authority for direction
    • How purity culture primed her for disconnection from her body
    • The experience of receiving a purity ring and how that made her think about her sexuality and purpose as a woman
    • Using embodiment, ritual and ceremony to heal her experience in purity culture and release her purity ring
    • How purity culture impacts more than just sexuality; it creates passivity, submission and codependency and how she reconnected to intuition

  • EP 16: How Much Power Do You Give To A Bikini with Jules

My girl, Jules, is back again for another powerful discussion on body image.

With summer arriving here in the northern hemisphere, it's likely that you're on the receiving end of some pretty toxic messaging around getting your "beach body."

In this episode, we share a different perspective than what you might be used to when it comes to this narrative.

    We discuss...

    1. Why wearing a bikini (or any specific item of clothing) is NOT the pinnacle of body acceptance
    2. Why it's not your bathing suit's job to grant you freedom, joy and presence when you're hanging out at the beach or at the pool...it's your's
    3. The power of choice when it comes to buying into harmful narratives about your body and putting life on hold until your body changes
    4. Powerful reframes and exercises you can implement NOW to help you feel more empowered and present when you're in a bathing suit this summer
    5. Why other people's opinions about your body are about them and not about you (and how your opinions of other people's bodies are also about you, not about them)

If you get something from this episode, head over to my Instagram and share with me what your takeaway was https://www.instagram.com/holly.toronto/

About Return to Wholeness

From the publisher's feed

Welcome to Return to Wholeness, a podcast for women who previously believed in dogma; whether that’s religion, diets or ideology, who found that they needed to fragment themselves and live into the expectations of others in order to feel safe in that environment and truly belong.
