At the time of Paul’s letter to Timothy there were sixty million slaves in the Roman Empire. The social status consisted of mainly two classes; masters and slaves. In our last broadcast we looked at the relationship of the church and the needs of widows. Paul says that the church should take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her.. But he adds that it is the responsibility of the family to care for their own. Verse 16 says, “If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows." In chapter 4, the apostle Paul speaks to Timothy about the qualities of a faithful minister. He tells him that his whole life must be an example of what he teaches. His motives must be of a pure heart. He should teach with authority based upon the truth of the Word of God. A good minister should be one who exemplifies spiritual virtue in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith and in purity. In chapter 4, the apostle Paul speaks to Timothy about the qualities of a good minister. Paul says, “be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity." It is so very important for us to know what we believe and why we believe it. Throughout church history there have been those who have departed from the faith. That is the description of apostasy – a turning away from the truth of the scripture. At the very core of apostasy is the devil. He is called the father of lies, and a deceiver. In chapter 3, the apostle Paul stated that the church is the pillar and ground of truth. And that truth is the gospel of Jesus Christ which is proclaimed by the church. Paul writes about faithful leadership in chapter 3. Here we see that the qualifications for a deacon are quite high. One desiring to be a deacon must be doctrinally strong, morally pure, spiritually mature, honest and able to handle money responsibly. He must also be a good example in his family life and respected in the church. Paul says, "But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.” These men should be proven to be sound in belief and sound in behavior. In chapter 3, Paul writes about the importance of faithful leadership in the church. As each church was established, he would appoint elders to lead them. And, growing churches meant growing needs. The role of a deacon was developed in the early church to support the elder or pastor with the practical and physical needs of the church. This would allow the elder to commit his time to prayer and the teaching of the Word. The term deacon, comes from a Greek word that means servant and in our study today we look at a deacon’s qualifications. In chapter three, Paul speaks to Timothy about the qualifications of leadership. The words bishop, elder and pastor are used interchangeably throughout the New Testament. It was Paul’s practice to appoint elders to lead each church he established. These men would be assisted by deacons. Today, we will hear about some of the qualifications for one desiring to be an elder or pastor. Paul said, "Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach."
