  • #074 - The No.1 Fundamental Truth About Growing Your Business That Will Never Change

The no.1 fundamental truth about growing your business is, has always been, and will always be, RELATIONSHIP BUILDING.

We know that if we want people to invest in working with us we have to earn their trust. The problem is, there's a ton of crap online that actively encourages us to do that in a disingenuous, manipulative way.

Fake urgency. False promises. Exaggerated results.

Building real trust requires honesty, transparency, and patience (a much-underrated virtue). Genuine, well-nurtured relationships, over time, lead to loyal customers. Yep, over time.

We've all been on the receiving end of aggressive sales pitches, right? But here's the unvarnished truth—people make purchases when they're ready.

By maintaining a steady and supportive presence, providing value, and offering help when needed, you can become your ideal client's first choice when they decide it's time to buy.

Building strong (profitable) relationships in business requires time, the right approach, and a dollop of dedication.

It's the one thing I never, ever take my eye off, and it's served me damned well up to now!

My door's always open - if you want to chat this through and get my personal thoughts on how this applies for YOUR business, book a call with me HERE.

  • #073 - Is Overthinking Stunting Your Business Growth?

Entrepreneurship requires constant decision-making, agility, and a willingness to take risks. Yet so many of us fall prey to a common trap: overthinking. Left unchecked, this can seriously hinder the growth of our business. Understanding the consequence of overthinking in entrepreneurship can be a stepping stone toward building a more efficient, effective, and prosperous business. So that's the topic for this week's episode.

Overthinking leads to prolonged decision-making processes, and in a dynamic business landscape where opportunities are fleeting, this delay can mean missed opportunities. I'm not saying we should all be making instant, snap decisions, but there's a thin line between due diligence and analysis paralysis. Successful entrepreneurs understand that sometimes, it's better to make a wrong decision and learn from it than to make no decision at all.

Overthinking often implies an excessive focus on potential drawbacks and failures, which can stop us from taking calculated risks—a fundamental aspect of innovation. This risk-averse mindset, born out of overthinking, stifles our creativity, innovation, and ultimately, our business growth.

    Strategies to Overcome Overthinking

Understanding the consequences of overthinking is the first step; the next is learning how to manage it. Here are a few things to try:

Trust in your decision-making abilities: As entrepreneurs, it's absolutely essential that we build confidence in our decision-making skills. This means learning from past mistakes rather than dwelling on them, understanding that errors are part and parcel of the entrepreneurial journey, and acknowledging the lessons they provide.

Set Clear Goals and Deadlines: Clear goals provide a roadmap, reducing the potential for second-guessing. Deadlines curtail the time available for overthinking and promote prompt action. Practice Mindfulness: A mindfulness practice like meditation can help manage the stress and anxiety associated with overthinking. For me, it acts as a 'reset' allowing me to see my options more clearly afterwards.

Cultivate a Supportive Network: Building a network of fellow entrepreneurs, mentors, and advisors who can provide fresh perspectives, advice, or even a sympathetic ear, can be invaluable in keeping overthinking at bay.

Delegate and Trust Your Team: Overthinking can often be a symptom of reluctance to delegate. Trusting your team to handle tasks allows you to focus on strategic decision-making and reduces the burden of minutiae that often leads to overthinking.

In the grand adventure of entrepreneurship, maintaining a balance between thoughtful consideration and prompt action can make all the difference when it comes to business growth.

  • #066 - How Much Is Enough? - Why you'll never feel successful until you know the answer.

We've been taught, especially in business, that success equals growth. That bigger is better. That the sky is the limit. And while this mindset can drive innovation and progress, it can also lead to a perpetuating cycle of dissatisfaction and exhaustion. If we're always aiming for more without understanding why, we run the risk of never feeling truly successful.

Have you ever thought about your enough? What does it look like for you? What does it feel like? This is where courage steps in. It takes real bravery to look at your life, your business, your achievements, and say, "Yes, this is enough for me."

Now, some might view this as settling, but let me challenge that perspective. It's not about complacency. It's about understanding your values, your needs, and your capacity, and aligning those with your business goals. It's about balance and sustainable growth. It's being able to say, this is MY full-fat life and business.

Just because we CAN do something, doesn't mean we SHOULD. Maybe we can push for a 20% increase in revenue, but at what cost? Would it mean overworking our team or compromising our values? If so, then perhaps that isn't the type of growth we should be seeking. This is where we need to trust ourselves to make smart decisions. To do it OUR way.

As business owners and leaders, it's our responsibility to create healthy, sustainable environments where people can do their best work. It's about people, not just profit. It's about quality, not just quantity.

Here's a question for you: Are we growing for growth's sake or are we growing in a way that enhances our mission, strengthens our values, and supports our people?

I encourage you to spend some time reflecting on your 'enough'. Consider your core values, your reasons for being in business, the wellbeing of your team, and the impact you want to have in the world.

If you'd like to explore this topic with me in a complimentary Breakthrough Session, you can apply here: gillmoakes.com/apply
