We had the pleasure of talking to an amazing community member who has worn several hats in West Contra Costa. From teaching the youth to organizing with the community and now leading housing policy work, we welcome Valerie Jameson to the podcast!

Valerie Jameson is currently the Executive Director for Richmond LAND, the first women-led community land trust in Contra Costa County! What is a community land trust? A CTM is a nonprofit corporation that develops and stewards affordable housing, community gardens, civic buildings, commercial spaces, and other community assets on behalf of a community.

Richmond LAND’s mission is to build grassroots power for resident-driven and community-controlled land-use through community organizing, land acquisition, development, and stewardship of the land and affordable housing for long-term community benefit.

In this episode, we discuss Valerie's story and her current work with Richmond LAND, and talk future plans! Is gentrification inevitable in Rich City? What is the just-transition framework? What can be done to help folks who are being displaced in Richmond and its surrounding communities? We talk about the power structures in play and how community wealth can be maintained and led by our people through a vehicle like a CTM such as Richmond LAND. Tune in to learn more!

In this episode we introduce Juan Cano, a community member who works as a Program Coordinator at Life Long Medical Care in Richmond. We ask him about his upbringing in the United States, and ask what kept him motivated throughout high school, college and post grad. We touch a little bit on what is going on with COVID-19 and how it has affected our community. We share our suggestions to people who are not sure about the future, young adults dealing with career uncertainties, and older heads dealing with the pandemic.

This episode was recorded at the beginning of 2020! Way before COVID-19. We highlight the journey from a kid born in San Pablo, the experiences he went through growing up in his neighborhood and how he navigated the complex system of public education in Richmond.

Miguel is now working with Richmond Promise, a program dedicated to educate, mentor and promote higher education for Contra Costa County students. We have a personal connection with Miguel and in this episode we hope to bring some different ideas on the demographics of Richmond and how throughout the years it has been a home for primarily black and brown people. But the history is sticky! Listen in.
