Rick Brown

Why is Jesus's nature so essential to understanding his teachings and our Christian life? In Luke 20:40-21:19, Jesus reveals His divine nature as Lord as well as His physical nature as the true heir of David, while teaching essential Christian behaviors through contrasting characters: the widow's sacrificial giving challenges our generosity, the scribes warn against hypocrisy, and His prophecies prepare us to resist deception and experience persecution.

The key to how we should walk in God's path lies in Jesus' promise, "by your patience possess your souls"—showing that spiritual fulfillment comes not from acting in desperation and panic, but from cultivating patient faithfulness that allows God to reveal Himself in His own perfect timing.

Why do some believers lack spiritual power and depth in their walk with God? Pastor Rick dives into Acts 19, where Paul encounters a church who had never received or even heard of the Holy Spirit. Though they'd received a baptism of repentance, they needed to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus in order to receive the power for a godly life.

The passage climaxes when new believers burn their magic books worth millions in today's dollars, teaching us that when God convicts us of sin, we must act immediately and completely—destroying anything that opposes His kingdom rather than waiting for convenience or risking that these harmful things might damage others. True Christian living requires both the Holy Spirit's supernatural empowerment and our willingness to make costly sacrifices in obedience to God.

Why does following God seem to make life harder instead of easier? Many believers wrestle with this paradox, expecting faith to shield them from difficulty, yet finding themselves facing even greater challenges. The truth is that God never promised us a conflict-free existence; rather, He equipped us to navigate life's inevitable struggles with divine wisdom and strength.

Through Genesis 26, we see the contrasting modes of handling these struggles: fleeing from adversity in paralyzing fear or standing firm in unwavering faith. These biblical examples reveal a profound spiritual principle: our response to conflict determines whether we experience God's abundant blessings or carry unnecessary burdens. When we respond in Christ's power, the struggles don't disappear, but they become the very crucible through which God refines and transforms us.

Have you ever felt like someone was setting a verbal trap for you, asking questions not to genuinely learn but to catch you saying something they could use against you? In Luke 20, the religious leaders launched their own "Operation: Gotcha" against Jesus, sending spies who pretended to be sincere seekers of truth while actually plotting to entrap Him with His own words.

Trying to discredit Him with either the Roman authorities or the Jewish people, they asked loaded questions that they could force Jesus into political or theological corners. But His responses were so masterful that these would-be trappers found themselves silenced, "not daring to ask Him any more questions." This passage reminds us that when we approach God's truth with genuine hearts rather than hidden agendas, we find not a trap but a treasure—and that no human scheme can outwit the wisdom of God.

Who's Really in Charge Here?

Have you ever heard a teenager defiantly tell their parents, "You're not the boss of me!"? Or watched employees challenge their supervisor at work? We see people questioning authority everywhere today—in politics, at work, in families, and even in churches. But this isn't anything new.

The Same Old Question

About 2,000 years ago, religious leaders asked Jesus basically the same question: "Who put you in charge?" Pastor Rick Brown explores this timeless struggle with authority in Luke 20:1-19, showing us that this rebellious attitude goes all the way back to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Breaking It Down: Questions, Stories, and Warnings
Pastor Rick uses a simple format to help us understand this passage:

* Five key questions about authority
* One powerful parable Jesus told
* One clear warning about the consequences

The Choice We All Face
Here's the thing: the religious leaders couldn't even answer Jesus' simple questions because they cared more about looking good in front of people than actually finding the truth.

Today, we face the exact same choice they did. We can either:
* Humble ourselves under God's loving authority, or
* Keep insisting, "You're not the boss of me!”

The Bottom Line
As Pastor Rick reminds us, Jesus compared himself to a stone that builders rejected—but that rejected stone became the cornerstone of the entire building. Jesus has authority whether we like it or not. The real question isn't whether he's in charge, but whether we'll align ourselves with that reality or keep fighting against it.
The choice is ours, but the authority remains his.

What would you give up for someone you truly believed was King? In this installment of the Fresh Love Series, Pastor Rick explores the key spiritual lessons behind Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The crowds didn't just cheer; they literally gave the clothes off their backs, and a donkey for him to ride, laying their garments on the road before Him in radical worship.

This challenges our modern understanding of worship—are we giving Jesus our spare change and leftover time, or are we laying everything at His feet like those early disciples? Are we ready to give anything we possess because "the Lord has need of it," like the owners of the donkey? King Jesus will return; will we hold back and forfeit our place in his kingdom; or lay everything, including our own lives, at his feet?

What if the difference between a life well-lived and a life wasted wasn't about how much you accumulated, but about how faithfully you invested what God entrusted to you? Pastor Rick dives into Jesus' parable of the ten minas, told near the end of Christ's earthly ministry. Through this powerful story of servants given equal resources but producing vastly different results, we are presented with a sobering truth: it's possible to have a saved soul but a lost life.

The faithful servants who invested their master's money and multiplied it were rewarded with greater responsibility and authority, while the fearful servant who buried his portion lost everything he had. Kingdom investing means using our every gift, talent, opportunity, and calling to advance His purposes, and refusing to let fear keep us from the abundant life Christ promises. The winners in God's economy aren't those who play it safe, but those who boldly invest their lives in eternal purposes, ensuring that when they meet their Master, they can present a life multiplied for His kingdom rather than buried in the ground of missed opportunities.

In a world full of hypocrites and half-hearted Christians, have you ever wondered what true repentance looks like? In Luke 19, Jesus meets Zacchaeus, a wealthy chief tax collector whose story shows the beginning steps of real transformation. Despite his despised day job as a collaborator with Rome who cheated his own people, Zacchaeus had a burning desire to see Jesus that drove him to extraordinary determination—climbing a sycamore tree despite his status and stature. When Jesus called him down, Zacchaeus discovered his true destiny: not condemnation, but salvation.

His immediate declaration wasn't just words—he pledged to give half his possessions to the poor and repay anyone he'd cheated four times over. While the Pharisees believed their good deeds could earn heaven, Zacchaeus understood what they missed—we can only reach heaven through Jesus, not our works. Faith operates as a one-two punch: love God, then love your neighbor. The humble faith of Zacchaeus immediately produced action, demonstrating the essential truth that true repentance must be shown through radical transformation.

In this installment of the Fresh Love Series, Pastor Rick dives into one of Scripture's most sobering yet hope-filled passages. Jesus, with unflinching honesty, reveals to His disciples the brutal reality of what awaits Him—betrayal to the Gentiles, mockery, insults, spitting, scourging, and crucifixion, the path for humanity's redemption. The disciples' inability to comprehend these words mirrors our own struggle to accept the hard things in life, yet Jesus calls us to lean in and trust even when understanding eludes us.

Immediately following this dark prophecy, we meet the desperate blind beggar whose persistent cries demonstrate the radical dependence we need to have on Jesus' mercy. Like this man, we are spiritually blind and utterly helpless without Christ's intervention. But his desperation wasn't weakness—it was wisdom. When we have nothing left and the darkness of life feels overwhelming, that is when we truly see that our only hope is Jesus.

What does it mean to have a childlike faith? Jesus declared that we cannot enter God's kingdom without it, but this doesn't mean abandoning wisdom or becoming naive—rather, it means cultivating the open-hearted trust and dependence that characterizes a child's relationship with a loving parent. Christ calls us to be "wise as serpents but innocent as doves," combining spiritual discernment with pure-hearted trust in Him alone, not in riches or earthly security.

Like little children, we must practice stepping out in faith, knowing that our heavenly Father is walking beside us. In this passage of Luke, we see this contrast between the humble dependence of children whom Jesus welcomed, and the rich young ruler who couldn't surrender his earthly treasures—showing us that true closeness with Jesus comes not from human wisdom but from childlike trust in our Savior's power and love.
