Not sure about you, but I got a Jackson Hole hangover this morning. I was also up late watching the Phillies making another dramatic comeback in Anaheim. Anyway, September rate-hike odds jumped from around 35% to nearly 57%, and short-term yields and the dollar strengthened. My own view is that he still isn't in a position to hike in September, but it does not change my investing strategy or portfolio construction. I also make the case that raising rates by .25% doesn't do shit for supply-driven inflation (as of today at least).
We also touch on Trump's announced deal giving the US majority control of more than 65 billion barrels of Venezuelan oil reserves, what is indeed the biggest oil deal in history, and whether this brings relief at the gas pumps and on inflation.

It's Jackson Hole day, and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first symposium keynote as chair at 10 a.m. Eastern. What I'm watching is whether he leans hawkish or dovish, his stated preference for saying less and letting markets do the talking, and the chance that the Fed anchors its 2% goal to PCE rather than CPI. My take is that any real clarity from him lands as hawkish.
Nvidia had a day for the record books, adding around $442 billion in market value, the second-largest one-day gain for any stock ever, with the shares up nearly 9%. I dig into why the move might have more room: that roughly 70% fiscal 2028 revenue guide implies something near $670 billion in sales next year, which would make Nvidia the third-largest company in the world by revenue behind only Walmart and Amazon, and at a far higher margin.

Last night's Nvidia earnings were the main event, and I live streamed the call and wrote up my full recap on Substack. The quarter beat, but the bigger surprise was CFO Colette Kress guiding fiscal 2028 revenue growth of around 70%, well above the 44% Wall Street was modeling. On top of that, AWS committed to another 2 million GPUs and the company guided Q3 revenue to $108 billion. The stock fumbled in the after-hours session before that guidance turned it, and it's up over 7% this morning.
I bought Meta yesterday and walk through the swing-trade thinking: a beaten-up valuation, the proposed $17 billion child safety settlement clearing a major overhang, and my ongoing doubt about whether the AI capex spend ever earns its return. Software had a strong morning too, with CrowdStrike and Okta posting big numbers and Salesforce's new Claude Force integration fueling the idea that the SaaS apocalypse is over. BWXT and the US Army's plan for nuclear microreactors at five bases close out the show, tying into a reshoring and nuclear theme I follow closely.

Nvidia reports tonight and I'm planning to live stream the call so we can go through it together. What I want to hear is a catalyst for 2027 and 2028, some sense of where the next super cycle comes from once the hyperscalers own all the chips they need for this one.
Zoom and Intuit both got hit last night after average quarters, which pulls us into the AI disruption debate. Intuit's record $2.2 billion buyback is impressive, and Zoom's Anthropic stake is worth noting. Of course I also walk through PCE this morning, where a large chunk of the number represents a jump in portfolio management fees and insurance coming from the financial sector. AppLovin's consolidation range, the Department of War's $750 million rare earths deal in Brazil, and the SemiAnalysis report on OpenAI's Jalapeño chip round out the show.

Bessent said Monday that the Treasury has not bought a single bond yet and the buyback operation begins September 9th, and he's got up to $950 billion available if he wants it. This was clearly posturing, but I would take him seriously if I were an investor at least. Of course we get into Stanley Druckenmiller's WSJ op-ed, "Let the Bond Market Speak," aimed at his old hedge fund friend Bessent. As far as I'm aware, Druckenmiller has been short long duration bonds for a bit, so his trade keeps working as bonds continue their sell off.
This week we have PCE data, Nvidia earnings, and Jackson Hole. We go through my entire portfolio briefly, just a quick briefing on positions like Bitcoin, Lam Research, Caterpillar, Travelers, BlackRock, Amazon, Union Pacific, and some utilities in the XLU.

All eyes are on Nvidia earnings Wednesday and Jackson Hole on Friday, while Bessent keeps talking up more Treasury bond buybacks. My read is this is the debasement trade at work, a liquidity and fiscal dominance signal rather than actual dollar printing, and I get into why Bitcoin is my preferred hard asset here even as gold rips.
I walk through the tungsten and rare earth story with Almonty Industries, the Iran and Strait of Hormuz situation, Nvidia's Poolside stake and AI licensing deal, and Nvidia raising AI chip pricing into what should be a big earnings print. I also cover Ken Griffin's Citadel block trades and the energy sector with Exxon and Chevron. Nvidia reports Wednesday and I will recap it.

Simeon McMillan of Accrued Interest returns for his quarterly check-in after a heavy Q2 media earnings season. We get into why Wall Street keeps misreading Netflix, the watch-hour metrics Simeon thinks are noise, and the margin and free cash flow story behind Bill Ackman rebuilding his position. Then we turn to AppLovin, where Simeon owns getting it wrong, and break down what actually rattled the market, the slower e-commerce ramp, and where the thesis stands now.
From there we run through his short book, the Duolingo call he flipped, and the Warner Bros bidding drama pulling in Loeb, Einhorn, and Soros. We close outside the media space on the AI capex debate, why Simeon is not in the bubble camp, and why he still calls Meta the cheapest name he follows. Full breakdown in the episode, and the link to Simeon's newsletter is below.

Stocks are up pre-market with Bitcoin hitting $79k overnight, gold ripping, and the 10-year back around 4.7. The debasement trade is still very much alive after Bessent doubled down on TV yesterday. I think Warsh is also more dovish on rates than people give him credit for, even though he stays hawkish on the balance sheet. Jackson Hole next Friday will probably bring little clarity, and mostly noise for long-term investors.
The main story (in my opinion) I wish I had led with is Walmart selling off around 10% yesterday, with US comps ex-fuel growing just 2.6% against a 3.5 to 3.7% consensus. Under the hood, there were plenty of positives like global e-commerce up, advertising up, membership fees up, and margins looking decent. When stripping out the health and wellness drag from drug price negotiations, US comps at Walmart actually rose 3.4%. Still, the consumer is getting selective, and I think the K-shaped economy is worse than the media wants to admit.
I also cover my watchlist adds in Almonty, MP Materials, TransDigm and Figure, why Amazon keeps getting punished on the CapEx story, the Grok 5 training news on the Colossus-2 cluster, Texas halting up to 1,800 data center projects, and Nvidia's reported investments in Cloverleaf Infrastructure and a $10 billion stake in Poolside. Nvidia reports Wednesday.

Yields reversed hard this morning, with the 10-year and 30-year climbing almost right back to where they were before yesterday's Bessent buyback news, as if nothing happened. However, this is still a liquidity story, and a signal of more fiscal dominance, although it's not actual dollar printing. This is still part of the debasement trade in my opinion. In fact, I believe yesterday's buyback news is also bullish for long duration tech stocks, not just bullish for Bitcoin and gold.
I get into the WSJ visuals on who holds US Treasuries, US debt crossing $40 trillion, and why the AI boom and global reshoring are pushing long end yields up. I also cover the hawkish-leaning FOMC minutes and Warsh floating fewer meetings, and two new watchlist names in Almonty Industries, a tungsten miner, and MP Materials. I close on the learning compounds theme from my post about why the best part of being a long term investor is that knowledge keeps building on itself.

Being a long term investor means you learn something every single day, and that learning compounds the same way a portfolio does, so by year 11 or 12 you pick things up much faster. It is a full time job on top of a nine to five, but the work is what separates you.
From there I cover Moderna and Merck's melanoma vaccine trial success sending Moderna up big, the KOSPI's wild swing with SK Hynix erasing an 8% drop on a 40 trillion won buyback, OpenAI's slowing growth as Anthropic more than doubles revenue to $11.6 billion and passes it, the race to build America's first new nuclear reactor and why Caterpillar owns the shovels to all of it, and European banks humiliating the Mag Seven at 10 times earnings. Stick around to the very end for the breaking news that the Treasury is doubling the size of its liquidity support buybacks for longer dated coupons, a real signal for the debasement trade and why there is no place to hide but assets. Nvidia reports next Wednesday.
